My 50 year old Amazon Rico, has developed a cancerous tumor on his tongue. My vet says it is inoperable and it is just a matter of time. I am feeding him pureed food via syringe and so far he is doing okay, but I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions that might help with keeping him as healthy and comfortable as I can during the time he has left.

I'm sorry Rico has cancer. Why do these things have to happen?
If you think he would benefit from better nutrition than baby food, have your vet order some LaFeber's Emeraid Omnivore. It is a powder you mix with water to however thin/thick you want and feed just like you are doing with the baby food.

Since cooler weather is coming, a heat panel that attaches to the cage or an oil-filled radiator to keep him a bit warmer would also help him be comfortable. Some people prefer a heated perch but I've never tried those.

Also speak with your vet about medications for pain control, maybe something like Tramadol.

And most of all just give him the comfort of your company. Try to avoid being upset as much as possible as they are influenced by your moods. (Yeah, easier said than done, right?)
Many hugs to you both!:sadhug:

When my budgie had what we suspected was cancer, we provided extra heat (through a ceramic hear emitter), and tried to provide him with some of his favorite things (toys and such). I also asked the vet about a pain medication, which he got on bad days (which became daily towards the end). I'd suggest asking your vet about palliative care, which can really help towards the end.

I'm so very sorry about your bird's diagnosis. The only advice I can give has already been given. Be sure your baby has adequate and appropriate pain killers and love him a lot. Let him eat whatever he wants and can eat.
