Desperately looking for answers/insight!
I have a little green cheek (22 years old). He had rhinolith surgery about a decade ago and they completely mangled his poor little nose (the one side is just a big hole now). He has had the occasional issue off and on (sneeze attacks that were treated with saline drops for 3-5 days and all better, a couple times he needed a 3-5 day treatment of Metacam but other than that no real issues). About 2 months ago he got extremely ill (to the point that they thought he was in heart failure- praise God it turned out to just be some type of really bad infection) and a round of antibiotics cleared it all up. He was great for about a month. Then he started seeming a bit off- we are hours from a vet and avian vets here are not particularly helpful (they asked if i would like to book him in in 2 weeks!); i managed to get the doctor to send a script to a local vet for another dose of antibiotics. He was on it for 5 days and then I noticed a horrible smell coming from that opened nostril...
He has been like this for about a month! We have tried 3 different antibiotics, saline drops, ACV, literally anything and everything that anyone can come up with. I did finally discover that there is an actual avian clinic 5 hours away from us snd got him down there just over 2 weeks ago- they did a sinus flush (i thought there was probably something stuck in his nose, and noone else was able to do it). The vet said that nothing came out but that there was a bit of redness at the end of the flush that would indicate some type of information (dub the last 3 antibiotics- two attempts at orals and an ongoing topical straight into the nostril).
Nothing is working!
He is too small to do anything else besides a culture; which mommy is booking him in for but it is probably about a week away and then takes 10-14 days to get answers back. Meanwhile the smell is getting worse and I am absolutely terrified!
He is acting completely normal, his appetite is great, he is flying around, chasing my feet, being a rambunctious little stinker and everything about the exam was normal (he was diagnosed with a heart murmur years ago and even that seemed to have resolved- constant stressed out prayers and a litany worth of grey hairs later!). He does not have any discharge, he does not have any buggers, he is not sneezing at all, his eyes are completely clear. He did initially have some of the "snotty" sounds like he had nose drips in the back of his throat but none of that anymore either.
The vet does not know what to do; I have poured over anything I can find on the internet to no avail; I am at a complete loss- I do not know what to do. Yes, cultures, but that would be 3 weeks away by the time it is all done and the smell is really bad and I am terrified (I have no other family)!
Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone ever seen this before?
Please help!
