I am looking to buy a flight cage for Peatree, and I'm looking to buy it off of Amazon as I have some gift cards. At first I was avoiding the non-name brands, but that is the majority of what is on there. So I've been comparing them with the one name brand I could find, Pervue, and I'm really not seeing any reason to go with the Pervue over the other options. But I need to talk this out before I make a decision!

The Pervue has a 78% 5 star rating out of 1,700 reviews, while the non-name brands have 83% out of 2,300, 77% out of 5,300, and 79% out of 3,300. They all have similar high ratings, except the non-name brands have a higher number of reviews. The biggest complaints for the off-brands seem to be them arriving broken (which I'm not concerned about- I could exchange it), the instructions being hard to understand, and some people give it a low rating for durability. However, the Pervue is also getting low ratings for durability (and they are having some arrive broken too). It has 144 reviews mentioning poor durability, whereas the off-brand ones have 143 and and 101, with one having no number for this at all. Considering that the Pervue has fewer reviews than these, it comes out on top for poor durability. On top of this, it has mentions of the food doors being spring-loaded, and this being a risk for catching toes (although some seem to see this as a perk and not a safety hazard).

If they were closer in price, I would be more inclined to go with the name brand. But the off-brands range from $90-$130, while the Pervue is a whopping $299. Budget wise, I can't really do that right now. I really just want to get Pea out of the travel cage she's been living in for the past little while and into a big one again. Which tempts me all the more to go for one that I can get right now.

I would love to hear thoughts on this! Or experience, if anyone has one of these cages.

Here are the non-name brands I'm looking at -

And the Pervue -

I thought the same thing and bought a 30x18x18 Yaheetec cage from Chewy. It was AWFUL. It went together so badly I had to zip tie it, because the gaps it left were completely unsafe. I will never buy a cage from them again.

I have a pervue travel cage and I probably wouldn't give it a good review. Its so heavy and I'm afraid if I were to drop it the doors would spring open. Also the bottom grate seems like it should be zip tied to keep it from sliding out. any other brands on amazon?

Have you considered Wayfair? I’ve had good luck with them.

What state are you in. I have an empty flight cage. I don't remember if it is an A&E or a kings. It looks similar to the A&E posted by Gen120 but it has a drop down platform.

Most of my cages have come from Amazon. Most are cheap and are a pest to put together, but I don't mind using zip ties to keep things together for extra support. The worst cage, for my grey, is from Asom (sp?) - it was missing parts, and the bottom shelf needed to be zip-tied to keep it from popping out every time I moved the cage. Other than that... if you want a good-quality, long-lasting cage, DON'T go through Amazon. I don't mind replacing cages after a while, so I get the best I can afford off Amazon.

I saw some on there. Not too keen on the wheels though, as they don't appear to be detachable, as the legs are fixed. My mother used to have a great cage for our Nanday when I was a kid (not yesterday lol). Pica isn't in her cage a lot, but the main thing is finding sturdy bars for perches and bowls when she is in there.

The problem with amazon is it is filled with fake reviews and descriptions of products that range from exaggerations to outright lies. Amazon rarely polices it.

I say that despite buying huge amounts of Amazon products, they are delivering multiple times a week. So I'm not saying "do not buy from amazon" just "beware" and make sure its returnable. And that last doesn't just mean the policy --something like a bird cage can be returnable but impractical, as you may have to destroy all the packaging to just try putting it together.

I have two pervue cages, one I got (hobson's choice) from the pet store to take my Amazon home. It's ... ok. Nothing really wrong with it.

But I bought a big stainless Prevue was delighted. It's very heavy duty, fit together well, big nice locking wheels. But it was also quite expensive.

The saying "you get what you pay for" has never been true; lots of people pay for quality things and do not get them.

The real saying no one uses is "You do not get what you do not pay for". Really cheap items can sometimes meet the need (I buy rarely used tools from Harbor Freight for example), but a bird cage has to resist abuse, corrosion, cleaning, did I mention abuse.

Because they are so hard to return, and because it's not a lightly used, disposable thing -- I would splurge, and even consider stainless if you can afford it. I would buy the amazon cheap ones only if you feel comfortable being able to return them (from a practical standpoint, I know they are "returnable").

FWIW if you want to splurge, I have been delighted with the prevue 333133. It's huge, heavy, but really well built. But quite expensive.

Thank you, I will check it out. I currently have two Pervue cages for her. One at my place and one at my friend's. She spends about equal time in each place, but it's not practical to get a bigger cage for the other apartment as it has to be packed away every time we leave:)

I bought a huge small bird flight cage from a add on Craigslist. She wanted 50 for it and when she heard why I needed the cage she delivered it to me for 30 bucks. Look at used cages on Craigslist, Facebook, next door. Deals show up on decent cages every so often.

I've gotten 2 cages off of Facebook. It's a great way to save money, and you can find good brands (like a&e). A drawback for me was that they need to be cleaned and disinfected really well, which meant taking the cage apart to clean it (outside, and I got one of the cages in December) and putting it back together with no instructions. And if there's anything available depends on where you live.
