Buying a new oven

I've tried to do some research on this subject and have come away more confused and overwhelmed.

I need to buy an oven for my small one bedroom flat. I plan to move my birds into the bedroom whenever I cook, but it's a very small place so they'll still be quite close.

What sort of oven is safest? What questions do I need to ask the salesperson? I'd appreciate some help. I really want to make sure I get the right thing.

I think the most serious problem with ovens is the self cleaning function- you want one that doesn’t have that and you also want to remove the birds from the oven area while you run the oven the first few times to burn off any residue that may be left from making it.
