Budgies Unusually Sluggish and Sleepy

Hello all

tl;dr- Budgies sleeping most of the day today. One of them is a new baby, so being unenergetic is unusual.

I recently got a new budgie to be a buddy for my existing budgie on Saturday after his original brother passed a couple months back. I didn’t mind foregoing the quarantine peroid as the person whom I purchased my new little guy from is a highly reputable specialist budgie breeder who I’ve purchased from in the past and took him to the vet as soon as I got him.

Everything has been going very well, my original bird Nemi has been getting along swimmingly with the new baby Comet, but it kind of intimidated by the energy and slightly poor flying of baby birds. Comet on the other hand already sits on my shoulder and, while very skittish at first, is very willing to try anything for millet.

All has been good until today when, I woke them up as normal and gave them food. They both ate as normal and did their normal wakeup routine. But instead of waking up fully, they both decided to go back to sleep. I shrugged and said maybe they wanted a bit more shut eye. The problem being they have been sleeping -> eating -> drinking -> playing for a few minutes -> back to sleep for a couple hours. I’m fully fine with Nemi chilling out as he’s an adult budgie and goes at his own pace, but for Comet, a newly weaned budgie, to have no energy was very concerning.

Some environmental changes or factors to note:
  • They played and flew a TON yesterday, especially Comet so they may be tired
  • It has recently turned very cold for the first time this year and I’m not sure the heater heats their area very well. I gave them a space heater this afternoon just incase.
  • I’ve had to add both their foods together in the same food bowl which has introduced both of them to different diets
Birds Behavior
  • Sleeping a lot as mentioned
  • No tail bobbing
  • Singing while napping as normal
  • Not overly puffed but comfy puffed when sleeping. When not sleeping, relaxed puff.
  • Still very willing to do stuff for millet
  • Still plenty vocal when they are awake
  • Preening normal amount
  • Not playing with toys much
  • Not coming out of cage unless prompted or upset
What do you all think? Is it just exhaustion due to the excitment and big change of a new bird or is it sickness? I have a vet appointment for a yearly checkup for Nemi on Thursday anyways but I want to know if it’s something I should be worried about. Thanks for any insight!

Update:
They are better today. A lot more energetic and lively. Flying around as normal. The only thing that changed was that I gave them a space heater lightly blowing in the cage overnight. They might have just been too cold to sleep the night before. I’ll update again if anything else happens and/or once I go to the avian vet.

Glad it seems to be working. Other than the heat, I hope they both did not catch a cold together, being both tired at the same time.
Then again, I am always tired when the Sun is up, and energized then the Moon is out.
You mention they both been doing this, but you had one longer. How long have you had the original bird, and how long have you lived where you are? I am curious if a space heater was needed last year. Just curious if it affect the original bird, and his previous buddy, last year when it got cold for you.
I have learned that budgies do need a certain temperature. Average 70-75, but minimum to 60. Now, i not need heat like most people. I am comfortable in 20-30s while other people bundled up. But my tiny apartment does get cold (at least where I live, only in January it seems). So when the thermostat does hit the mid 60s or lower, I turn the heat on for him. I am not going to make him feel cold even while I am still hot in 60s.

I'm curious. You said that your birds were singing while sleeping? Were they sleeping with their heads resting on their backs and still singing? Or were they sitting facing forward with their eyes closed and singing?
