Budgies asleep during the day? Normal or Unique Personality?

Hello, its been about 3 months now since I got my budgies. They are still young.

However, I have noticed my budgies in general aren't as active/talkative as the ones I normally see at pet stores/ on videos.

My budgies seem to like to sleep alot during the day, and rarely make any noise. Sometimes they get noisy during dawn and dusk, but other than that, they are dead quiet. They also don't often play with their toys. Even when I open the door to the cage to let them out, they don't seem to motivated. And when they do fly out, they just go on top of my fan and fall asleep there.

I just hope they are not secretly sick or something. Their poo is healthy and they LOVEEE eating. They are great pellet eaters. Though I am having difficulty giving them greens haha....



Between the two, the green one (Mangrove) seems to be the less active of the two. Mangrove rarely calls, but he likes mumbling to himself. In addition, I saw him doing some open mouth breathing today, but that might've just been nervousness from me vacuuming my room.

I am just nervous to take them to the vet because I don't want to stress them out. : (

They live in a big cage with plenty of toys so it is defintley not that they are bored.

Just... inactive.


I hope you guys can help me stop my worrying. They are too cute!!! I want nothing to happen to them hahhaah.

If they are sleepy and lethargic then they should see the vet I think.

It may be helpful for you to post more details about their diets.
Did they have a wellness check when you first brought them home?
How often do you see open mouth breathing?

Agree with Shezbug - avian vet. It's a good idea anyway to get new birds checked over, even if it's just introducing them to the vet. Are they getting enough sleep? Like 10 to 12 hours since they are so young? It's good that they have a good appetite. Are they tame or are you working on that?

Currently their diet consist of 95% Roudybush crumble pellets and 5% spray millet treats. I'm trying to get them to eat veggies but they seem to only like pellets. They eat the pellets so fast, but I only give them a handful everyday or else they would never stop eating.

I have never taken them to the vet yet for I wanted them to get settled and feel safe somewhere before I take them out. That way they can look forward to coming to a safe home.

The open mouth breathing is rare, but it seems to be only after flying and when he is nervous (like when I'm running the vacuum).

Either way, I will try to take them to the vet this week.

Yeah, I cover their cage around 7pm and put them in a quiet/dark room, then gently pull the cover off at 7 am. Sleep is definitely not an issue for them.

I got the birds from a convention, so I wasn't able to see the breeders aviary. But knowing these are budgies, I bet they kept too many in a small area so I hope my budgies didn't catch some kind of sickness.

I haven't really worked on taming them yet, but they really show no fear of me. They don't like to be touched, but they really like when I stick my hand near the food bowl, because they know its the hand that feeds them! hahahaha. I don't plan on hand taming them, but I would like to train them to return to their cage when I let them out. But first thing first is making sure they are healthy ^^

While you wait to go see the vet there's a couple of things to try.
How warm is the room they're in? You've already mentioned a fan and budgies will mouth breath if they're too warm. Put a bowl of water at the bottom of the cage for bathing.
What stimulation are they getting? Are you with them constantly? When you're not there is there a TV or radio playing? Play them some recordings of budgies on YouTube to see how they react.
Give them mashed up hard boiled egg, see what happens.

*edit* BLIMEY!! Just realised. You say you had these two for 3 months? Really? They would have been too young when you got them. Don't get any more birds from that person. These budgies are still juveniles. They've had no socialisation with more mature birds and may just not know how to be budgies. Play the sounds on YouTube, give them some egg and get them to that vet.
