It's been about a week and a half since I left the vet. Ok here's the story. I managed to break Gonzo's shin bone. It was maybe 12 hours broke before we got him to vet. They x rayed him and he had a3 piece break. So they splinted it , Meds , and hands on me using his toes for him. So my situation is he's in the collar with his food aligned the best they could do. My concern is he isn't using his toes at all on broken foot or using ing the splinted leg as a "peg leg". I don't to tell u all how guilty I feel and could us some info on the healing process. More info would be nice and ill be checking this all day.

How much do you trust your vet? Most bird splints make it nearly impossible for the bird to use the leg. I would just have the vet recheck periodically and make sure the splint is in place and not expect him to move around much. What do you have him in right now?

He should be in a hospital cage with platform perches with food and water low. He needs to have limited movement in order for the leg to heal. Is he eating, drinking and pooing okay? If he's not using it he is still in pain. It is also possible that it's wrapped too tight or incorrectly. He should have two toe forward and two toes back. Is he on pain meds so he can get some rest and relief? Did he see a avian vet or a regular vet?

Thy dd a temp. Splint first to let swelling. Go down. He's on calcuim and a pain med. we have all right cages and built him a cave to sleep in since he can't get into his sleep tunnel. The vet is Ocean State Veterinary Specialists: 24-hour emergency and ...www.osvs.net/East Greenwich.

I really appreciate the info. There is no swelled up toes either. His toes are lined up correctly too. I remember the vet saying she was able to tell he could feel his toes. But without even seeing a wiggle makes me nervous. Do they generally use their toes or not during this type of event.

If I'm understanding you right, he's only been to an emergency vet. He should have been taken to an avian vet as soon as possible after that unless they recommended that you wait more than a week for the swelling to go down. Does he have a regular avian vet? If not, check with the e-vet to find a good avian vet in your area. It looks like the hospital you took him to has exotic vets that see birds. It's possible that they are highly experienced with birds. If not, you need to find an avian vet in your area. You can go here to find one. The Association of Avian Veterinarians | Association

You are a wonderful parront. With that bad of a break, I would think it would be awhile before it feels okay to flex those toes. He looks bright eyed and alert. His foot doesn't look swollen or necrotic. As long as he's eating and his poos look good and he's not fluffed up and lethargic I wouldn't worry too much. However, I would schedule follow-up visits weekly at first and then spaced further apart so that you head anything off at the pass. Is he on an antibiotic?

Thank you very much, It means a lot. I will be taking him in this week for sure , it just really got me today. As far as the 3 piece break she said its called a butterfly break. The green cheeks are great he's always going into my shirt which in this case turned out to be a bad thing. Ill come back with updates on his progress. Thanks for sharing

Awe, bless his heart! That's what Aristotle looked like! In our case, it was Aristotle's "drumstick" that got broken in 2 spots. One was right above the hock. He took a LOT longer than anticipated to heal. I had him in a clean fish tank with a towel on the bottom then paper towel over that so it was easier to clean. I had shallow ceramic bowls with food and water and toys hung from the lid (hamster lid). I kept a heating pad underneath half the tank as well. I was worried about toes as well, but he won't be able to move them much right now. As long as they look healthy, you're all good!
Also wanted to state that Aristotle went in every 3-5 days in the beginning, then weekly after that. The avian vet I went to only charged for the cost of the dressings, not office visits every time. At one point we thought he was going to need surgery, but when the a.v. put him under and rechecked his fracture - he was healing great :)

When my one dove broke her tibia, she was casted and kept in a small cage with a couple soft towel on the bottom, food and water on the floor for six weeks. She hopped around on her good leg and I didnt see any toe moement at all, I kept checking her foot for heat or cold. She was on calcium and metacam. After the cast was removed it took a while for her to get normal use of the leg, she was keept in her hospital cage another two weeks after the cast removal, and she is fine now. But she was mad as all get out from being cooped up for so long. Hope your baby heals quickly, big big hug.:hug8:

I had a budgie who broke her femur and she was splinted with tape and the vet told me she would not be able to move her toes because of the splint. She did really well after the splint came off and had to have ten days of physical therapy with us moving her toes, grasping and extending her toes twice a day to get her grip back on her foot. They want your bird to be as physically unenergenic as possible and they do not want them acting like a curious, active bird. Her quote was "We want Golda to be bored, very bored, and to sleep a lot while her splint is on."
