Hello I have two pair of blue gold macaws , last year my 4 year old pair had a baby and this year both pairs have been treading but haven’t gone down , is this due to having pairs side by side in seperate cages ? That’s the only difference

I'm guessing he's wondering why his pairs have not bred this year.

My bird came from parents who were housed side by side with other macaws- it never seems to stops them or any other breeding pair of birds there at the breeders from breeding. They all share an aviary wire wall with another breeding pair.

Maybe the title could be changed to breeding instead of breading as it gives me the hebejeebees.

Maybe they just don't feel like breeding because the conditions aren't quite right - temperature, humidity, daylight, food. As you pointed out it could be the neighbouring birds putting them off - worries over food. Maybe they're just not in the mood.

Yes, some birds are too busy worrying about the other pair so therefore they divert their attention to the other pair rather than getting in the mood. 4 years old is not all that old for Macaws to be breeding. And maybe last they just got lucky! You might want to try a visual barrier between the two cages so they can't see each other.

Having other pairs nearby can cause them to stop breeding. I read this, don't know from experience so take it with a grain of salt. But, from what I understand it's important that they can't hear each other.

Hearing each other is not the problem. Jan's idea of a visual barrier is employed by lots of breeders. However, I've known of birds that breed without visual barriers.

There are many possible reasons they aren't breeding. They could be overweight, lack stable perches, or dislike the nest box. There could be a health issue, too. Sometimes, birds just take time off. Has their diet changed? If the only difference is moving the pairs beside each other, that's probably the answer.

Breeding doesn't guarantee eggs. Macaws are one of the few animals that will have recreational sex. Same sex pairs have been observed "breeding."
