Bourke's Parrot - recovering from blood loss, advice and experience sought

Tl;Dr has anyone had a bourke's parrot (or I guess budgie or other small Aussie parrot might be a reasonable comparison) that has lost blood, more than a few minutes of oozing but not enough to go to the vet, and how long was the bird lethargic while recoving blood volume?

My baby boy had an incident a two afternoons ago where I came home to find he he was bleeding from his left foot (don't ask) which was probably very slow oozing for a couple of hours in total). I'm pretty confident he would have lost less than 10% of his weight in blood. He normally weighs about 42g.

I hesitated and decided against going to Emergency that evening because he was well enough to actively go and drink and eat as usual. Hr was also actively preening his blood soaked feathers, and appeared to occasionally nibblr/lick around his injured foot. I managed to get him to dunk his foot into a dish of water to do the briefest of cleans and then into some flour (I didn't have cornflour or styptic on hand). I put him to bed early and made sure he was warm for overnight.

Next morning (yesterday) he was perky and hopped onto my hand as I opened up the cage and flew around as usual. The bleeding had long stopped and everything that was damp and bloody last night was dried and flaking off. I misted his bloody feathers and he obligingly started preening. He weighed just over 40g. He ate a bit of broccoli and a corn kernel and his seed mix. He tired out pretty quickly and went quiet and I put him back in his cage, thinking he can have a sick day in-cage, and I could probably gamble with cancelling my vet appointment. Then he was wasting energy zipping up and down the length of the cage wanting out, so I reluctantly let him, and he flew to rest at a warm high window, one of his usual spots.

I came home to find he was zooming around almost like usual, but after bouts of energy he tired quite quickly. Still ate like usual. I gave him spinach leaves and boiled egg which he ate.

Today (Saturday) I have been spending all day home with him, and he's mostly been normal but lethargic. A few chirps (more than the last couple of days), good appetite, flying from perch to perch and sleeping/napping a lot. I don't know if it's me merely having the hours to watch him, but he's definitely still quite lethargic. He's feathers are nearly all cleared up from preening and light misting yesteray and today. His foot is still a bit blood stained but otherwise does not look like it's in terrible shape or worsening. His poops seem less frequent but otherwise normal.

I feel like the worst is over and he's well on the road to recovery and I suspect he'll be lethargic until his blood supply is fully replenished again. Does anyone have any similar experiences with Bourke's or similar small aussie parrots and blood loss recovery? How long did it take? Anything I can do (other than a vet check) to help him more?

Today he was a lot more energised, chirping to be let out from under the covers. Hopped onto my finger then flew off to do his rounds zooming around the room. He's definitely a lot improved today, chirping more than 4x what he's been doing and actually letting me offer a finger perch and staying long enough for tummy kisses. Even flew to land on my head once (a rare luxury for me!).

He's still lying down to rest a lot, or when standing to rest he favours his good leg, tucking up the injured one. He's stays fluffed up when resting. He was beak gnashing starting late yesterday while resting, which was reassuring, and has been doing it a bit today too while resting on perches closer to me

I've seen that he must have actually plucked a bunch of belly feathers out on Thursday aftenoon in his panic. I can see new growths coming in thank goodness.

He continues to eat his water-droplet covered spinach and broccoli, bits of boiled egg, and his seeds. He endured a bit more misting today.

I did cancel this morning's (additional) vet appointment which I'd made on Thursday night since I thought at this point the vet really wouldn't be able to offer more than what I was already doing, and we avoid the stress of packing for a confined trip to be manhandled by a stranger.

Tomorrow's meant to be a crazy hot day here, and I am hoping he'll actively drink water and stay cool while I'm at work. I'm hoping he'll be 100% by mid-week, at the rate he's improving

It sounds mostly like he has a bit of pain. Just keep things easy for him until he recovers. If it continues, then seek a vet's advice.
Thanks. Yeah, I'll keep an eye on his foot usage. He used to be quite ambidextrous, or slightly preferring standing on his left foot when resting. So far it seems to be almost back to a normal pink colour with no obvious swellings or anything anywhere.

He was more chirpy this morning, thank goodness. I am going to assume yesterday morning's unusual quiet was just a trough day in his recovery. Still lots of quiet standing/sitting at warm windowsills than he ever used to.

By yesterday afternoon he was back to having the energy to warn the lovebird off who was being to aggressively affectionate, and then later come and regurgitate food for the lovebird which he has been doing for a couple of months now. Finally started making some typical bourkie sounds in the evening. In other words, more normal behaviours returning

Only comparison I have is a Budgie who's toenail was accidently over clipped by my mother - this happenes a number of times per year due to her having over 100 budgies.
They bleed quite heavily for a short time - seem to recover pretty quickly - but are not real active - can't say if the not real active is because of the blood loss or that they have been put into a breeding box (that's why their toenails are clipped to avoid damaging eggs) None have ever needed more than the foot wash. No vet visits required in the almost 60yrs she has been doing this.

Yesterday afternoon he chirped to welcome me home, first time since the accident. He sat on the little perch near my workstation while I was there, and one time made his baby noises for extra attention while I spoke to him. This morning he flew downstairs, chirping calmly as he looked out the downstairs window while I got ready to leave.

He is back to enjoying standing on my fingers while I give him tummy kisses (or at least he stayed for about a minute, which is a long time for his independent little bum lol). A few days ago he wouldn't even stand on my finger, or fly off after about two seconds. His feathers are all in place and looking beautiful and tidy again and he's back to normal weight. He's still standing on his non injured foot when resting more often than not.

I'm really happy and reassured with his progress. I'm hoping and expecting he'll get return of more balanced left foot usage in a few more days. By this afternoon it will be a whole week since the accident.

One of our Bourke's caught a toe on something and didn't lose much blood (a tiny smear), and he was still pretty tired for the next couple of days, mostly probably from the stress of us having to chase him down and hold him to inspect/add styptic powder. We kept an eye on him and loaded him up with treats, and he was fine. I'm glad yours is doing so well!

It's been just over a fortnight and I've finally seen him standing on his hurt left foot while resting! He's pretty much recovered, I think. Thanks everyone who's read this, and offered their own experiences for comparison.

So overall, eating and drinking and pooping normally following blood loss trauma and hurt left foot and claws.
First 2 days - unusually quiet behaviour, sleeping on stomach, avoiding interaction with birb and human
Next 2 days or so - extreme lethargy after brief bursts of energy, limping when walking
Within 1st week - return of most normal behaviours but still standing only on uninjured foot when resting
About 10 days since injury - left foot still not quite normal eg when on a perch, doesn't grip as tightly as right foot
Just about 15 days - normal use of both feet, standing comfortably for periods on left foot when resting.
