Hi!
I'm a relatively new parakeet owner. Parry and Bloo are part of my new family! They've been with me for 2 months and a month respectively.

I'm concerned as I just picked them up from my birdsitter who looked after them during spring break, reported that they were furiously eating and were more active than ever. They did seem to be a little more chunky and fluffy. However, when I brought them home, they didn't gain weight but actually lost some, from 37g and 40g to 28g and 29g.

After spending some time at home, they returned to their normal sizes but I'm highly concerned bout one of them as she was molting a fair bit and now has black poop. I read that it could be an intestinal problem or because they weren't eating enough. I'm just going to monitor them for now and see whether these problems were due to a change of environment. But any feedback would be awesome.

Thanks!

Welcome.
Sometimes blue, purple, darke green or dark red foods will cause poop to look blackish.
What do they eat?

I hope they go back to their regular selves now that things are back to normal. If anything seems off you should take them to an avian vet just to make sure. They are very cute btw!!

@WendyN Their diet was rather consistent during that period. Seed + Pellets (though the pellets were ignored most of the time). During the last few days, I asked my care taker to only feed it the pellets they ignored cause I thought they seemed morbidly obese from the pictures they sent me. So I now suspect that the black poop may be due to the digestion of pellets? Now they seem to be eating fine. Crossing my fingers cause I don't want to bring them to the vet again as I just did 3 weeks ago.

:welcomesign: food will change the color and it's really great when it's the first one of the morning so be ready for that as well.
