Leo (Cockatiel) is bleeding on the inside of her wing SOMEWHERE, there's blood everywhere and I just put a heap of flour on it (as well as pressure)to try stop the bleeding but I can't see where the bleeding is coming from exactly. She has blood in her mouth, on her beak, and on her feet too.

I haven't got anything else to stop the bleeding, only flour.. is there anything else I can use to clot the blood up to stop it? for a little bird they sure do lose a lot of blood!!

Yeah, I looked it up and seen that, but haven't got any.

I've just put more flour on it and I'm putting pressure on it.. but the flour seems to be useless now more then ever. When my mum's Cockatiel Charlie had his nail half ripped off I had to keep putting flour on it every 20 mins and it took 4+ hours for it to stop bleeding.

If you can find where the source of the bleeding is you can really pack it with the flower or see which one to pull. Is there anyone there who can hold him for you so you can examine him?

Cornstarch can also be used but Cayenne pepper works the best. The blood in his beak is most likely from him picking at the spot. It does sound like a broken blood feather. You need to restrain him and find out where the bleeding is actually coming from. If it is from a broken blood feather and you can't get the bleeding stopped you will need to pull it.

Watch these videos.

Marie & John beat me to it, I was going to say sounds like a blood feather- Those (to me any way) seem to be the hardest things to find where the blood is coming from.

I'm the only one home at the moment, so there's no one to hold her. I'll watch the videos, thanks. I'm just waiting for the flour to dry off to see now, I won't put anymore on until I can check where it's coming from, if I can.

Agh! I'm stressing mad right now.. and so is Leo. :(

I just had to hold her down for me to get a look - it's a blood feather and at the end of the quill it's full of blood, but the quill is right under the skin. Do I still need to pull it out?

I'd pull it. If it gets bumped too hard, or she preens it too much, it could start bleeding again.

Okay, I'll pull it out then. It's not loose or anything, which I assume doesn't matter? it's just choc a block full of dark blood and was definitely the one bleeding.

How'd it go Renae? Were you able to pull it? They can be tricky so close to the skin.

Broken bloodfeathers is not a job you should take on by yourself. The possibality of damaging the wing or feather follicle is a bigger risk than anything else.

Remeber you can also damage your relationship with the little guy also.

Whatever you do hope all goes well!

I didn't end up doing it by myself, I waited 'til my mum got home from work and she held Leo while I pulled it out. Leo was really good and I think feels a bit better now, she was picking at it before I pulled it. :)

I asked mum to keep an eye on her today.. I won't be here because I'm starting a course today.

By the way, thanks everyone. :hug8::hug8:
