So, one of my budgie's is currently going through a rough moult and I realised that one of his growing pins have a dark colour. He has some black feathers on his head normally so I thought it could be simply that, but this one is a really long pin. I was worried that it broke bled when I didn't see it and then it formed a scab or the pin is rotting at the worst. So, is this normal or should I intervene and bring him to the vet?

When the feathers are growing/developing there is fresh blood supply there which dries up as the feather matures and is ready to come out of the keratin sheath.

I’m assuming that’s possibly what you’re seeing.

My budgies sometimes grow those large, blood-filled pin feathers. They have always shed the sheath and grown in normally. My vet liked it when one of my two blue and white boys had a pin feather like that when I brought them in for a well visit. He could easily tell them apart! Lol!
