birdie worse after antibiotics?

hi! my cockatiel recently has been having some inflammation by his nares, so our avian vet prescribed meloxicam and sulfa trimethoprim. has anyone had any experiences with these? our boy was relatively doing fine before, talking, singing, eating, etc. but after taking the antibiotics, he seems worse for wear, constantly sleeping and puffed up. is this normal/side effects of taking medication, or should we go back to the vet? we just started the antibiotics as well but we're disheartened at how they're not seeming to help.

My immediate guess would be that the illness is just now showing more symptoms, regardless of antibiotic usage. Don't stop the antibiotics, but talking to your vet is not a bad idea. Symptoms *usually* improve within 48-72 hours of starting antibiotics, so if it hasn't been 3 days, it may be hard to tell if it is doing anything.

it's been three days:/ i'll definitely give the vet a call tomorrow, but thank you for the advice! he got his scheduled dose earlier.

I would ask your vet too about giving probiotics. I hope your bird feels better soon.

A common infection can be avian clymadia, and only doxycycline works against this tricky infection. So it could be different antibiotics are needed . Communication with your veterinarian is key . I have complete faith in my vet, but sometimes meds have to switched , just like in human med.

Hi! My cockatiel has been on doxy and meloxicam before (he experienced some open mouth breathing for a night, and we immediately rushed him to the vet a few months ago). The vet thinks doxy was not the helpful med since my cockatiel perked up immediately so she prescribed a different one for the current issue he's having. I did call her today though, and they told us meloxicam is well known for causing drowsiness and lethargy so we're crossing our fingers that's the case and that he's not actually getting worse. He was definitely more active today.

Ok good ,as long as you aware of avian clymadia being a possibility and that's been ruled out .
