Bird sleeping during day

Hi, I recently got an 8 week old cockatiel a few days ago and I’ve noticed that yesterday and today it’s been sleeping a lot during the day and I don’t know if that’s normal. It also has an injured leg and I don’t know if he’s resting to recover from it or anything. I’m not sure if he’s getting much sleep during the night because he sleeps a lot during the day. He also got very attached to me and I’m not sure if he sleeps too much during the night. I told my vet that I kept checking on him and that he was usually awake. She told me that checking up on cockatiels and stuff will wake them up because they sense movement. It looks normal as it sleeps and doesn’t really puff up too much. Could any of you guys help?

I don't have much advice on cockatiels or sleeping patterns in general, but healthy birds to tend to nap during the sometimes. If you notice them sleeping for hours on end or if they have symptoms like staying fluffed up when awake, talk to your vet.

I’m not too sure if he is fluffed up or not right now. Could I send you a photo and you could tell me?

The stress of coming to a new home and his injury might be causing him to take naps during the day, but if he keeps sleeping during the day for a long period of time, you should talk to your vet.

I’m going for a check up this Sunday, do you think it might also be the fact that he has an injured leg? Or portly clipped wings? The injury was caused by his poorly clipped wings. The pet store clipped all his primary feathers sadly and so he fell. He’s still eating fine and everything, do you think that may be the cause?

My Pip takes naps during the day sometimes too but he is a parrotlet. Why do you say he has an injured leg does he walk/stand on the leg? I think he will be fine till your check up on Sunday just make sure he is eating and drinking.

If you do have a picture of him you can use the attach files on the bottom left to post them for us to look at.

Are you keeping an eye on weight? Is he maintaining weight? Losing weight?

I'd be worried that he's not getting enough to eat at 8 weeks old.

I think it would be a great idea to get some pics of his leg (the one you say is injured) and also some photos of him to show what you are seeing.

I was just about to tag Monica and some others for some advice for you but I see Monica is already here :)

He fell while trying to fly due to portly clipped wings by the pet store. He could still stand on his leg but it’s very bruised. I’ve already visited the vet and she told me it’s just a big bruise and it’ll eventually go. On Sunday is the check up where she sees if there’s any improvement on his leg. I will be posting a picture of his bruised leg on this thread now

He eats normally and his appetite hasn’t gone away.

This is a photo of his bruised foot. I’ve already brought him to the vet to get it checked we reckon it was from a fall. She confirmed that it isn’t broken or anything serious but I will be having another check up this Sunday.

If you can get pics of the other things you see that you are concerned about they will help.

My thinking is that from your description he is tired from the recent move and learning all the new sounds and other things that go on at his new home as well as probably being extra tired trying to use his wings that are not working as well as they were before the store chopped them off. Checking on him while he is supposed to be sleeping is only going to disturb him and make him more tired lol. Moving to a new persons home is a stressful and tiring event for most birds......he is still very young and also extremely new to your home- give him time to adjust.

I am so very pleased to hear you have a vet appointment already for your new baby :)

Ouch! Poor bubs! :( I imagine he's feeling under the weather with all that!

The main thing is is that he's still eating and maintaining weight!
