Hi everyone
I recently got a bird from the birds market and I'm afraid the bird might've been from China and could have carried the coronavirus

Is this likely? If so what should I do??

Thanks!

Where do you live? Are you close enough to China that this is a realistic possibility?

Research into the origins of this strain of coronavirus is ongoing, but this virologist suggests that snakes may be the source: Snakes could be the original source of the new coronavirus outbreak in China

If you have other birds, then you should be practising good biosecurity as a matter of course by quarantining your new bird in a separate airspace to your existing flock. This is more to protect your existing birds from bird-specific diseases like PBFD that don't affect humans. If you don't have any other birds, then practice good hygiene: wash your hands after handling your bird, don't touch your bird then touch your face, monitor your bird for any signs of illness. Things to look out for are lethargy, tail bobbing, difficulty breathing, changes in droppings, and lack of interest in surroundings.

Hello Viv, Welcome to the Avenue :)

It is always important to have a check up at the vet when bringing home a new bird. You could use that appointment to express these concerns and ask any questions you may have.

Like Danita said many of us are not qualified to answer this question. But having said that, Guangzhou China has one of the largest parrot markets in the country. And do import to the states and other countries from there. That will be put on hold now due to the new virus.
I would strongly recommend seeking a avian specialist...but be prepared to know details of where bird came from, breeder info, the whole ball of wax.. They will ask you every question possible.

I don't think there would be any issues with importing like that we would have heard about it by now surly. Now if you live in or around China that might be different but if there was any issues with imported items we would be hearing about it.

I did see something about the US possibly stopping all flights from China in a video or something the other day though.

There is actually. Many of us have heard about it (who have employees and family members in Hong Kong and China). They are stopping shipments and it is a big fuss (they evacuated co-workers of mine). Local US news never covers these things- international news is all over it. But I was in asia during the SARS outbreak...
we learned lessons to say the least.

During that time: mThey shut down the bird market temporarily. Quite dramatic and the spread from 'pet' bird to humans in those consitions was minimal. They were more concerned with livestock.

Opps I forgot: yes. They are shutting down exports.

Thank you for the suggestions! Im mostly worried because I live in Hong Kong. I'll try and take her to the vet if they are open but I don't know much about the breeder and etc. Would the vet even know much about the coronavirus? So far he hasn't had any signs of illness but he's pretty feisty

Feisty is good! You want your bird to be active and inquisitive.

At the moment, we simply don't know if birds can carry or transmit this form of coronavirus. Please be on the alert for any changes in your bird's behaviour or activity levels - if he or she seems quieter, has less energy, has nasal discharge or shows any kind of respiratory distress then it's very important that you get them to the vet immediately. Your vet is likely receiving updates on the situation as it evolves and will know who to report potential avian coronavirus infections to.
