hello all,

I have a Senegal parrot of 10 weeks old.
The day before yesterday she pooped brownish and i think it was blood.
I asked my vet about it, and he told me to contact him if it kept happening.

But after this once, her poop returned to normal, so all was okay for the vet.

For me however.. I keep wondering what this could be?
The only thing i can think of, is an Apple i feeded her the day before, and forgot to get it the evening out of the cage!
Could this make her poop brown, or even cause bleeding? I really cant think of anything else! There also seemed nothing wrong with her, she's been her charming self all the time :)

Thats a pretty significant color... even when we feed beets, we barely see that strong a color. Is your vet close by? Put that sample in a ziploc baggie and take it immediately in for a gram stain. They can do a stain without having an appointment. I would bring the bird along too in case the poop shows white and/or red cells, you have her with you.

Not sure that's a poop I'd wait and see with.... birds are notoriously great at not looking or acting sick and being in dire condition. Better safe then sorry - least in my opinion.

Hmm, i should see the vet then yes!

I cant take the poop with me though, it was only once and my mom allready cleaned it off, her poop has returned to normal so i cant take a sample with me! :(

But yeah, for my own peace of mind i'll make an apointment with the vet!
Thanks for sharing your opinions with me!

A vet check is a wise choice. You can also show your vet the picture you took. I've done that before with my tiel as he has the remarkable ability to have normal looking droppings when we get to the vet's office.

If there is blood, even tho looking normal, the white or red cells show up in the stain. But, usually the vet can get a sample from the carrier or the bird is happy to poop on the exam table :)

Vet check is always the safest. But do check for any toys with red dye that he might have chewed on. The dyes used for bird toys are usually water soluble.
I've seen that color poops when my birds have eaten red foods like strawberries so it isn't necessarily blood. But apples are not red enough to cause a color change like that.

Mine poop funny colours with carrot, red berries, pom seeds and red chilis and capsicums. Apple usually just makes for watery poops, so best to be safe and take your Sennie to the vet. Hope everything is okay with her.

Looks like fruity Zupreem poop.

Are you feeding dyed colored pellets?

I steer clear of colored pellets just because of a red poop that cost a $300 vet bill. I did feed blueberries one time before I went to the vet and scared the vet tech when she saw their poop. But that was a dark purple almost black.

Lead poisoning can show as blood in the poop so it is better to be safe.

I was just about to ask about fruity pellets as well. Although when mine eat fruity pellets their poop is more of a brownish orange color.

Very well, i shall stop feeding colored pellets, ive allready decided that because i read then they would only pick their favorite color and nothing else. So to avoid a one sided diet i'll go with one colored pellets of Zupreem :)

So now we'll just wait for the vet :)
