Help! I found a half-hatched egg in the nest box, but the bird is inside the egg and is stuck. How can I get the bird free from the shell? I' sure the bird is alive because I saw him breathing inside of the shell

.

For chickens it says can take 24 hours to get out of shell & to not interfere during this time period as they have enough food supply.

If its half out of the shell the inside membrane may have dried on the chick.

Egg needs to be kept warm & humid

Good luck but will the parents feed the chick if it hatches?

How many eggs hatched? Have they abandoned the nest?

This site has some good info also saying to wait before assisting chick as it could get injured.

Hope the lil guy will be alright

I’m curious to know what happened.

The general rule is not to help, ever, as they need to build their strength by pipping themselves. It’s very hard not to help!

Oh crappy! Just showed up for me, is baby still trying? You can, I have done...with my vet on the phone, assist hatch,,I had to wet a Q tip. And swab him, out of the egg, he was partially hatched..he was a " dry" chick stuck to the egg. Belly button not completely closed..we did it together..my baby is now 18 years old..hope your baby hatches and is ok!

He made it out of the shell, but he died at 3:30 am after i fed him, he only hatched 2 days ago. I Think he died of an infection,as there was poop on the shell. His skin turned yellow and he died laying on his stomach. His feet were deformed, he didn't have any toe nails and his feet were curled in

So sorry, Maybe this can help for future.

Many times weak, sick or deformed chicks can find it hard to get out of the shell.
Sometimes the membrane dries & the shell gets stuck to the chick too. Poor hatching can happen under egg is kept at less than ideal hatching conditions when humidity is low or not routinely turned etc.

This poor baby had deformed feet & likely health issues. Turning yellow could be malfunction of liver.

Good website for how an egg develops & hatches. It does appear assisting has to carefully watched & decision weighed.
Its a miracle how an egg develops & hatches.

Have you seen a baby parrot before this? Their feet can look quite perculiar but do grow quickly.

Poop In the shell could be he got stressed while trying to get out.
@Zara is there such thing as meconium aspiration syndrome in birds? Poop inside the shell is not normal. @parrotman I’m sorry the little one died.

I am not reading it as there was poop inside the shell with the baby, it says poop on the shell which comes across to me like there was poop on the outer shell?
