We just got our first bird ever. He is a blue budgie. We got him at a pet store. We have had him for 4 months now. He finally feels safe enough to come out of his cage and fly around. But he is so excited he throws the cardbord pellets on the floor of his cage to get our attention so he can come out again. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Avenue! :starshower1:

cardbord pellets
Are these what you are using to line the cage? Switching to sheets of paper will stop your bird throwing them - it is also cheaper, less messy and easier to monitor poops :)

Welcome to the Avenue.
Cardboard pellets really aren't all that safe. They can get wet and hold the moisture and fungus or bacteria can develop. Paper is the best cage liner - newspaper, packing paper, paper towels are all preferable.

Welcome to the Avian Avenue! For a minute there I honestly wasn't sure if there was a new type of edible paper-based pellet on the market that I didn't know about! As for his behavior, I would also try switching to paper. (Don't tell my local grocery store, but I pick up a bunch of their weekly sales papers and use those for lining some of my birds' cages). They work so well!

If your bird eats a good brand of pellets he does not need vitamins. Vitamins in excess can do a lot of harm. From what I hear from the budgie people is pellets, some seeds and veggies.
