We recently finished two rounds of nystatin to treat what the vet believed to be a fungal infection on my conure's feet. The first 10-day treatment did nothing since the bird was spitting out most of the medicine. The second 10-day treatment was more successful as we mixed it in her food and she ate all of it.
Her feet looked to be 97% cured when we finished the second treatment. At that point, I began using an OTC silver wound gel to see if that would help clear it up. It did. [Originally, before going to the vet, I had started the silver wound gel. The vet told me it was fine to continue using it, but we put it on pause during the fungal treatment since the vet didn't seem to think it was necessary and extra handling was stressing the bird out.]
Once her feet looked 100% normal, I stopped using the silver wound gel (roughly 3 days ago). Today, I can see the beginning of flaky little circles forming, and I'm afraid the fungus wasn't fully treated / is coming back.
I've read that betadine can be good as an anti-fungal. Has anybody tried that or had luck with things like tea tree oil or neem oil? Are these oils safe for birds?
