I’m advancing in my reading of the dog grooming book & have come to realize I don’t own all of the necessary tools. I need to get thinning scissors & curved scissors for her feet.

Some basic research seems to have either Geib or Kenchii as front runners. Does anyone have any experience with either? Are there other brands you like that I should consider? Thanks so much!

I have the curved "Geib" brand. LOVE them. I can't offer suggestions on thinning shears, as I've never used any.

Thanks, Toy! The grooming book said that to make the paws look naturally shaped, as opposed to trimmed, to go over them with thinning sheers. But it looks like Geib makes both & there are sets, so I’ll see if the sets are a better deal!

I’ve been using Hashimoto brand, I have their curved shears and love them. Straight thinners from Petsmart due the job, especially if you are just doing trimming. The Hashimotos hold up to cutting dense poodle hair and my terriers feathery top coat, so they should work fine on a sheltie and aren’t as expensive as Kenchii or Geib

I’ll admit that everyone has a different weakness - I love high quality scissors in general, not just for dogs, so it’s probable that I’ll splurge for the Geib.

I went to Ren’s Pets yesterday & an employee who is also a master groomer helped me try & choose shears. I went with Geib &, based on my home grooming ambitions, she said I’d never need to buy any others.

She had me hold other brands, especially its chief rival Kenchii, but the Geib fit my hand better (smaller) & were lighter. I also discovered that very high end scissors of any brand aren’t for me. They’re too smooth & practically silent - as an amateur, I think I need to hear the scissors for safety, if that makes sense.

But that’s not the most exciting part! I asked about a Sheltie specific grooming book. She wasn’t aware of any, but she used to work for Ruby’s breeder & offers 1 on 1 lessons for home groomers with their dog! We’re signing up for the spring!

Wow that's great news. I sure like my Geib scissors.

There is a specific Sheltie grooming book (Illustrated guide to Sheltie Grooming by Barb Ross), but dang it's in the $200.00 range used! Saw one on e-bay for around $150.00 used, excellent condition. New prices are over $400.00.
