I have a dowel perch that I would like to turn into a rope perch by simply wrapping bird-safe rope around it. I know some of the bird-safe ropes, but what would be the best to use on a perch where their feet will be touching? I just don't want their toes to get caught on any loose strands.

It is really hard to find safe rope. The best kind is supreme cotton, and I would only buy from a bird store I trusted. You can use vetwrap, and wrap that around a perch to make it safer. It is better to use wood that is not all the same thickness, like a dowel is. That can hurt their feet and cause bumblefoot. But as long as you have other perches, it should be fine. Grapevine is a good one, or any other twisty type perches.

Once I saw someone alter a dowel perch by sanding it or whittling it to add different textures and width to it. Dunno if that's an option or if it would even help

We have got coconut husk rope where I live. I believe it is safe because it is actually small pieces twisted into one big rope.

Sisal rope is natural fiber twisted, oil & chemical free. You can buy perches made from it or buy the sisal rope & wrap them yourself.

Sisal and/or hemp might be available at Walmart in the crafts section.

I too like the cotton rope, which I buy at Home Depot but they aren’t consistent with the sizes they carry.

Do you order it online, or do they have it in your store?

They used to have it in our store, but recently when I sent hubby he said they didn’t have cotton rope of any kind. (Helloooo we live on the water! You’d think it would be common around here!)

I found good sisal at the plant nursery. They had a non treated version for training saplings. It is a nice thickness for small birds too :)
