Hi, can someone point me toward really reputable Pionus breeders that aren’t too expensive? So far, I have talked with Patty’s in Florida, Parrot Starz inn Illinois and Omar’s Exotic Birds in Los Angeles. I got the feeling that Parrot Starz are seriously conscientious, but pricey; that Pattys is a mix of good experience laden with b.s.and expensive; and that Omar’s is inexpensive but perhaps the riskiest option.

What area are you looking in? Or are you planning on shipping the bird?

What do you find risky about Omar's? I ask because they are local to me and probably the most trustworthy breeders in the area.

I labeled Omar’s as riskier than Patty’s because the former is a pet shop and the latter strictly a breeder and, moreover, one who has been around for several decades specifically breeding Pionus birds. I have also spoken by telephone with all 3 options and the ones I am most impressed with regarding expressed standards and care ( including for example lab testing for diseases) are Patty’s and Parrot Stars. Omar does not test its birds for PBFD or any other diseases where the other two do. Also, Parrot Stars has implemented certain standards for buyers, for example, buyers must participate in educational sessions by the company.

I am not trying to disparage Omar’s. In fact, that is where I will probably buy my bird because of the location near me and the price. But I am more comfortable with the other two places thus far.
