Becoming semi-deaf b/c of my birds...

Is this a common issue with bird owners? Both me and my mom are having hearing issues, we have had our birds for almost ten years (6 small parrots, really loud parrots).

I bought earmuffs and have been wearing them when the birds get really loud, is there anything else that would help?

Age related hearing loss happens to all of us, so that may be at play depending on the ages of you and your Mom.

Otherwise, it's the basic stuff for hearing protection: ear plugs, increase your distance**, reduce the duration of exposure.

**for every doubling of distance, the sound level reduces by 6 decibels (i.e. don't allow a shout-fest on your shoulder)

The CDC published the following guidelines, so you can have an idea about safe exposure (level/duration).

Lastly, I'm curious what species are involved, and if you've both been tested by a hearing specialist to establish the hearing loss diagnosis.

I have a big bag of earplugs. I use them (when I remember) while someone sits on my shoulder so I don´t get screamed into my ear because it hurts (I have lovebirds who scream a shrill shriek).

This member has two Quaker parakeets and four conures (they did not specify which species).
