Hello! This is my tiel Janey. I noticed yesterday that her beak has damage on it. It came out of no where, I uploaded a picture of her two weeks ago and you can see her beak is completely smooth. The next picture is from 4/9 and it looks like she bruised her beak**. The last two pictures are from yesterday, it almost looks like a fungal infection or face mites? but I would be shocked at how fast it came on. Taking her to the vet would unfortunately be very traumatic for her, but we'll absolutely go if we need to! Just want to see here first if anyone has insights or thoughts on whats going on? She is eating normally and using her beak as normal for climbing/playing/preening etc. She has bruised her beak before and it grew out with some cracking/flaking but not as much lifting as I am seeing on the edges of her beak now. Her diet has also been adjusted to help her beak strength.

TIA!

**She is a rescue and very jumpy, I cannot handle her and out of no where she will fly off her perch and into something. We are still navigating this, so if you have any tips please let me know!! She is an amazing flyer and climber and loves sitting by the window watching cars. Its always the tiniest things, sometimes that I don't even notice, that send her flying without thinking.

Not a vet, but I always thought face mites impacted the nares too. It seems possible the bruise was bigger than it looked at first and the damaged area is flaking off. I know how tough it is to have a nervous bird you can't handle! If she likes millet, you could see if you can get her used to going into a carrier in case you do end up taking her. In the case with my tiel, I didn't lock her in before taking her to the vet, but I did practice moving the door. When bringing her home I opened the door to her cage and held up the open carrier to the door.

On the plus side, I have found avian vets to be very good at handling nervous and untame birds. I totally get avoiding the vet if it can be helped, I just mention this to reassure you that she'll probably do better than you think if the vet knows birds. :)

Thank you so much, this definitley helps! I have tried placing the traveling cage with millett in it for her to explore on her own but we haven't made progress with that in a few months. She will approach me now as long as she can't see my hands which has been a huge step and hopefully she will keep gaining trust over time:)

I think I'll give it a few more days and see if there are any coloration changes. Thank you!
