Bad Vet Visit

Since my bird had long nails and beak and a broken feather me and my family brought him to the vet for a check-up. When they brought us in they said they'd take care of his broken feather and went into another room. When they came back they had pulled the whole feather out and said: "It will grow back in nicer this way!". They also cut his nails way too short! He can't grip anything!

Am I in the wrong or is this veterinarian actually bad? (There are 2 "avian specialist" and unfortunately the better one was out for the week so we had to take to "apprentice avian specialist") IMG_3172.JPG

If it was a fully mature broken blood feather, then the vet should have left it.

If it was a blood feather that was broken and bleeding, then it may have made more sense to pull it.

That said, your conure should not have needed a beak trim at all. Far too young for that. I wonder if there were some issues since before you got him if his beak was really overgrown?

Nails will grow back in time. Not being able to grip is typical of nail trims...

My bad I typed wrong he only got his nails trimmed! The broken feather was fully grown and was bleeding but it was really close to his skin!
Hopefully, his nails will grow back quickly

Sounds "okay" then.

How is your baby's beak doing? I recall it looked off before getting him from the breeder.

When I brought my conure home he had a nail trim that same day and he had trouble gripping his perches. I put some vet wrap around his perches to help until they grew out enough. I only partially wrapped them so that he'd still be exercising his foot muscles etc. He was a baby and didn't really understand perches the first couple weeks.

The nails look okay to me? We’re they so short they were bleeding?

Cheeky has had nail trims that made it hard for her too grip perch. They weren't too short, just blunt. No sharp little points to stick in the wood for awhile. She quickly learned to rely on balance rather than points

Sometimes if nails are over grown the quick grows down too far and it's hard to clip them without bleeding. Also, sometimes vets think people want nails trimmed short so they don't have to come back as quickly. I always say to my vet just cut the tips, don't cut them short.

His beak has been doing great! no problems with it so far. The sort of "dent" in his beak is now gone!

No just short and blunt. The vet said that he didn't bleed at all!

He is starting to do this too. Although he keeps falling off sometimes! He sleeps in his tiny vet cage now so that he doesn't hurt himself when it's dark!
