I hope someone can help me here.
Hubby sent me a message that he found a baby sparrow at work.
It looks like a fledgling. Apparently it fell from the nest and couldn't get back.
I tild him to put it back and it's mother would help it.
Well, the mother saw it but just continued to feed the others in the nest.
The work crew gave it some bread they dipped in water and some water to drink. It did eat and drink what they gave him.
The mother did not bother to go to him all day, so hubby brought him home.
What should I feed it, and how often?

Awww, the little cutie. Can he fly yet or younger than that? I found a fledgling on the city street near a bus station last year. There must have been a nest somewhere around the bus station garage. Anyway, the little bird kept trying to fly up but there was a wall so he couldn't fly over anything and I think was afraid to fly out into the sidewalk with the people and cars. He had been there awhile because someone had put water out for him. I called a woman I know who works at the Aviary here. She too said put him back in the nest or a nearby tree. I said neither was possible. I said I could take him home with me. She said if I had sparrows in my yard- which I did- that if I put him in a tree or shrub there the other sparrows would take care of him. Which is what I did. But he could actually fly on his own. Yours looks maybe younger than mine?

Thank you for sharing that. It was really helpful.:)
It is trying to fly, but not there yet.
Omg it's so tiny. With my two big ones, I'm almost scared to touch it.
It really is adorable and once it can fly, (since we do have sparrows in a tree in our backyard), I will place it there, and hope they will "adopt" it and take care of it.

Here's a recipe to try. I did not use the vitamins or the egg when I was handfeeding Spee. You can put the food on a wooden coffee stirrer and then let the little guy take the food on his own. I know that some have used handfeeding formula such as Exact but that is not what I did. This recipe is from Starlingtalk (RIP website). If you think he may be able to eat something on his own (and this one looks like that is possible) then still handfeed but provide him with a small amount of water (lid from a bottle would work) and give him some millet. Then you can start adding other items such as finch seed, small pellets (would recommend Mazuri Insectivore). You can also add some mixed vegetables and see if he will eat those. A favorite here was cooked mixed veggies and generally the carrots and corn were the veggies that were eaten. I tried a water bottle with Spee but it didn't work out well. Wound up buying some very small bowls from Walmart for his food and water.
  1. 1 cup soaked cat food.
  2. 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce.
  3. 1 hard boiled egg. Make sure the egg is boiled at least 15 minutes to remove any bacteria that may be in the yolk.
  4. Avian vitamins.
  5. Around 750 mg calcium. ...
  6. Occasionally add small amounts of different foods.
Good luck and thanks for taking the little one in and caring for him/her.
spee in bowl.jpg

Small bowls used for food and water and tupperware type resting bowl. Spee could not perch due to leg issues caused when he fell several feet out of the nest.
I could not release Spee due to his leg issues and also because he had become very imprinted on humans (especially me).

Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately, it's not doing well. I managed to get him to eat a little bit of bread last night until I could get to the store this morning to get cat food and some wild bird food, but he is so lethargic this morning. I managed to get him to drink a little bit of water from a bottle cap but he won't eat at all.
He won't open his beak. I've tried gently tapping his beak to get him to open it, but nothing. I feel so bad. I wish my husband had left him there, but we are both animal lovers and wanted to help this wee one.
In all honesty I don't think it will last much longer. :(

Thanks all. We tried. It was just too weak, and his one foot was damaged, I suppose from when he fell.

It is possible that there was something already wrong with him and that's why the mom abandoned him.

According to my husband, she saw him, but stayed in the nest to feed the others. Maybe if hubby had left him, she would have gone down to him....we don't know.

So sorry but thank you so much for trying. You can't know whether or not the parents would have taken care of him. Sometimes they abandon a baby because they sense that something is off with him/her.
I wasn't going to take Spee when I found him. I put him to the side on the grass (he was on the road into where I live) so he wouldn't get run over. I then moved away and watched from a distance to see if mom or dad would
attend to him. Nobody came and I knew I couldn't leave him there so I grabbed him up and took him home.
