Am I right in thinking in the US they are called groundhogs? In German they are called "Murmeltier" or in Swiss German "Murmeli".

The best is when you see them shortly before their hibernation period, then they are even fatter!

I thought they were different, but evidently groundhogs are a type of marmot. :cantsee:

The US has a species of marmot. Maybe more than just one species. I remember seeing them at Yellowstone National Park when I was a little kid. They were yellow bellied marmots. Although, I didn't see any a few years ago when I was there. We also have groundhogs as well. They look similar but are different species. Marmots I think are in the western part of the US and possibly more at higher elevations. Groundhogs are more the eastern US.
