Baby macaw full exam

I live in southern cali, I was recently blessed enough to cross paths with a 3 month old beautiful macaw that I was given from a family member. He's not tagged, never been to a vet and is unweaned. My foremost priority is to get him to a vet for a full exam at the minimum ( maybe micro chipped as well). My biggest concern, and I have been searching all over the web for answers but can't find them, is i was told that some vets might confiscate a bird when it is un-weaned and not tagged and as much as I want to get him checked I don't know if I would risk the confiscation of my baby. Would you guys have any info on this? It would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you Steve

Never heard of such a thing - unless the Dr. has read a chip in the bird and it is registered as a stolen bird.

While the sale of unweaned birds is illegal in California, baby birds still need to vet sometimes. I would hope that a vet would be more interested in ensuring a long life for a bird than they would be in trying to enforce a law.

Does the law state you need a permit to own one? If it was given to you by family that would not be a sale. Does the vet need to know you don't own the parents?
