Baby Caique hatched tonight

Baby is here. No movement in incubator all day. Thought baby was DIS. But I kept the incubator close by.

Then the cheeping started 11.30pm. Baby had already cut halfway round the egg. in 15 minutes max, he was out ( Thank you for the humidity advice @Laurie)

provisionally named NIK-KNACK. hopefully he will survive Papa's clumsy parenting

Still attached by thread to shell - Papa disinfected hands and small scissors and cut the thread right beside the shell

He made it look easy. very active and wriggling. No signs of weakness or a struggle

Thanks Saroj. He's very strong so The signs are good for survival.

Hourly hydration starts as soon as baby uses up the last of the egg sac. Probably around 5am.

Just as well I'm off work for 3 days

Such a cute little one. Brings back memories. I never saw any of the red-bellied babies break out of their eggs all the way. Just saw the eggs rolling, saw some pipping and heard some peeping.
Nik-Knack is lucky to have a super dad!

Well I had to pop down to the all night pharmacy to get a pipette to feed baby.
Nik Nak surprised me with his arrival. I had given up hope when his mum lost interest. Mom's usually know best.

First feed of warm water and a trace of bio active yoghourt at 6.30am. 7 hours after hatch. Wanted to be sure baby had cleared up that egg sac.

Well he survived Papas first half dozen hand feedings. He's eating well and looking nice and red and plump at the wingtip.
Left him almost 5 hours between feedings tonight so papa could get some sleep.

Woke at 4am and found him sleeping quietly. Stuffed him with food.

Unless papa does something stupid I think his chances look good.

At least there are no power cuts this month ( the incubator! Aaaaargh) as national elections take place tomorrow. Baby has a good survival instinct!
