Sir Vasalot
Strolling the yard
Well we suspected they may be mating in the box. She would chase him around - then do this sort of woodpecker thing on his head. She would do some high pitched singing (she is normally quiet) and he would match it. They play chase, kissy face, fighty face, and finally a ritualistic dance. Soon they are side by side. Closer - then - the unique Greater Vasa mating ritual is taking place. The short video says it all. The gentle pruning she is doing to his head resembles the woodpecker hits of earlier only more gentle and amorous.
This type of bird mating is so unique, ritualistic, and primitive rarely seen in modern birds.

I will try to capture more pics and vids of their songs, courting, chasing, changes, and hopefully............more down the road.
Until then - enjoy the video and keep the questions and sharing coming!
