I'm not sure if it was this forum or a different site, but are there actual bird veterinarians and specialists here that answer questions and give advice?

Here's what I can suggest:

  • Seek professional help: If your parrot is showing any signs of illness or distress, the safest and most responsible course of action is to consult a qualified avian veterinarian. They have the necessary training and equipment to properly diagnose and treat your feathered friend.
  • Utilize reliable resources: While this forum can be a great source of information and support from fellow parrot enthusiasts, it's not a substitute for professional medical advice. Look for resources created by vet professionals or reputable avian organizations, such as the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV).
  • Share specific concerns: If you have specific questions or concerns about your parrot's health, sharing them with a vet might be helpful. However, remember to frame your questions as observations ("My parrot has been lethargic and hasn't been eating well") rather than seeking diagnoses or treatment recommendations.

Ultimately, prioritizing your parrot's well-being should always come first. By seeking professional help and relying on credible sources, you can ensure your feathered companion receives the best care possible.

Not really. We do have some members who work in the avian veterinary field but generally it’s everyday members with and without experience who will reply here. Most members will let you know if you need a vet or if they can help.
If you need an avian vet someone can help with that if you share your general location.

To add to the above, even if the most knowledgable of people will suggest you seek vetinary advice when your bird is sick as tests often need to be run to be sure of a diagnosis.

If the problem is a minor injury, it's possible the members here can help, but ultimately this website is not a veterinary care substitute.

Yes, even when a vet can physically see and handle a bird, a lot of ailments will present with similar symptoms, so further testing is often needed.

Sometimes we can make educated guesses based on past experiences or employment, but actual diagnosis and treatment (especially when an Rx is required) must be done with a licensed veterinarian.

Our Emergency area does have this banner at the top:

Thank you. My birds are all happy and healthy. They do not need a vet or any medical care. I was simply asking to gain information on who might be answering my questions on this forum.

The emergency forums are only available to be commented on by people who have been here 5+ years or have proven to be an asset to that area.

Everywhere else on this site, it's going to be people from all over the world, from all ages (preteens on up!) Who are interested in and/or have birds, particularly parrots. Some people are new to it; others have had birds for decades. It's a large, varied community :)
