Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that 2macshan is April's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Kai: Male blue and gold macaw 2 years 6 months
Kal: Male scarlet macaw 1 year 10 months
2. What got you interested in birds?
I have always loved them and all animals. There is just something about them that calls to me. I have had the Kai for 2 years and 3 months and I definitely very much enjoy sharing my life with our birds.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Happiness, stress, daily routine, a huge responsibility, and deep reciprocated love.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
Patience, compassion, a new lifestyle. We have also learned a new level of dedication and loyalty(fierceness even?) for our birds.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
Taking Kai camping and hiking to the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan when he was our only bird. We had so much fun and was so well behaved that we now take both of them camping with us.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
Our bird’s cages are downstairs in our finished basement, but they spend a lot of time out upstairs.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
We do not buy expensive tables or chairs because our sneaky little buzz saws get the corners off no matter how closely we watch them!
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Just forums.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
A VERY large outdoor aviary.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
A buffon’s macaw. Something about them moves my soul.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
7:00 am we uncover them and turn on their light and radio with rainforest sounds. They come up stairs and help us put sprouts in their dishes. After 30 min-1 hr they go back in their cages and are given their spouts, probiotics, more pellets, wood to chew, toy change/repair etc. When we return home from work they are out from 5-8 and of course much longer on weekends. We cuddle, do training ect. At 5:00 I make yummy veg chop per @macawnuts and we eat it together. Then we take up the uneaten sprouts, turn off light, turn down radio, cover, and begin the madness again tomorrow J
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Potty perch training isn’t that hard! I am so happy we did it and you can too! Accidents still happen but not very often. It really improved our quality of life with our bird's having them go in just a few spots.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
I would probably get older birds.
14. What other hobbies do you have?
Horses, reading, traveling.
15. Anything else you would like to share?
I am a probiotic and enzyme scientist. I went to school for Biology and read sciency things all day, often about birds. Owning macaws has taught me that when it comes to parrots, experience trumps a book education. I am still amazed and learning new things about improving their care everyday.
