Pip and Flash have been starting to settle in since they joined my flock last Friday. The evening that they got here I bough Pip and flash some live Crickets, Butterworms, and Superworms. They perked up as soon as they took sight of the insects and enthusiastically ate them. I'm going to be starting to place large orders online for feeder insects and possibly breed some of my own so that I always have some around for them.

Pip and Flash have been nervous when I walk inside their room but as I walk and talk around them slowly they show relaxed body language again. I have given them the opportunity everyday to come out of their cages. So far only Flash has come out and he has mostly hung out on top of their cages. A few times Flash tried to fly and land on a shelving unit across from his cage but he wasn't quite comfortable enough to land on it yet. He did land on the floor for a few moments as well as my arm. He also flies around the room and then lands back on his cage.

For those of you who don't know, Pip cannot fly. He had a wind injury as a youngster. Because of this I always have to make sure that I make special housing accommodations for him. Pip had X-rays done at the University of Guelph and it was decided that surgery was not an option because Pip was too small for it. I'm going to get a second opinion with my avian vets and if Pip can have a surgery to correct his wing issue I will have it done.

I moved Flash into a flight cage so that he has more space. It has some wooden perched, rope perches, a couple dangly toys, a foraging tray, a box to hide in, a toy that hold shredded paper, a foraging toy, and of course food and water dishes. Pip and Flash have been housed separately but I will see if they can be housed together in a larger space. In the near future I am planning on either giving them free range of an entire room, or building a large aviary for them. They really need the space to fly.

I am really happy that Pip and Flash are settling in and starting to feel at home.

I'll post photos of the flight cage soon. :)
