That’s actually a good idea. Not sure I can get an appointment on such short notice but he’s pretty easy to get into the carrier as long as you have a dowel.
Then you’re okay! I was going to inquire about that, but I was too lazy to type any more.

Me...I never did things like trimming his nails or clipping his feathers. (Yes, I believe in clipping feathers, and always get yelled at for it.) I would rather my bird hates the vet than me.

Do you have a specific date for getting him? Maybe if you explain the situation, the vet will squeeze you in.

tomorrow is day one. I would definitely rather him hate them than me. We never really cared if the birds hated us at the bird rehab, I mean they were wild and should hate us. He’s a different story tho. I don’t clip my babies wings unless they’re a hazard. I had two cockatiels who would repeatedly fly into windows and I’ve noticed that’s a big tiel thing. My other birds do fine. He’s never been clipped and it hasn’t be a problem, he doesn’t do flight attacks like some birds and he almost never flies unless he is startled. He prefers to climb to the floor and walk to you.

My amazon is potty trained so when he's w/ us... Mostly no poopy. I started by sitting in front of his cage & saying dukey everytime he pooped. Then we he became more & mire uncage bound, we gave him his cage & a basket that a rubbermaid container fit into (basket). We'd tell him where he could go & he flys, walks & goes. We use the basket mostly in the bedroom. He'll often Dukey on command which is place on badket & ask do you have to dukey? Sometimes yes & sometimes no. NEVER FORCED!!!

Just writing that because it's the truth & so I don't get scolded.

He's usually perfect but every once in awile... Dukey! Somewhere where it shouldn't. We're talking like 1 time every few months.

IF he HAD been a small bird, I'm not sure I'd have tried.

This is actually a good idea. I’ve never had to deal with HUGE bird poop before. At least not in my own home. Maybe I should do this with Coco and Moe, they’re the shoulder poopers!

So we just got Harley home! I was able to make him an appointment to get checked out and also got his nails trimmed! He looks amazing. He loves being misted and has been so good already. He’s been yelling “Hello” to us since we put him in his room. He is better at stepping up than any of my tamed birds and tried really hard to step onto my hand for comfort when he got startled by all the other people. I’ll also be posting this in the flock photos thread that I made so that everyone can keep seeing his updates there! He is already so loved. I wish I had taken these photos but they just sent them to me. Apparently they were taken on an IPhone 12. Gorgeous! The best! And he looks in damn great condition to me!

What’s the weight?
oooo, I’ll have to look at the paperwork they gave me! He let me give him scritches now that we’ve been home a few hours and hollers Hello at me whenever I leave. He hasn’t decided if my boyfriend is friend or foe yet.

My YNA has been on the light side of his species forever. 478 grams, since he was 9 months, now 2 years old.

He is not a big eater, and totally unmotivated by using food as a training or reward treat. So I was constantly putting him on the scale to monitor his weight. Not so much for awhile now.

He’s always holding steady at 478!

But you want to know it and monitor it fairly regularly. For example:

Your guy might need to LOSE wait because of his prior crappy diet, and you want to keep an eye on this.

He is overweight for his species but I’m not sure how much he should lose. Do you know what a good weight for them would be? I could of course just go look it up, but I prefer to hear first hand accounts from others. I’m not sure how easy it would be to get him on the scale myself, he’s pretty nervous of new things.

My 1 year old DYH amazon weighs about 430 grams. He has the ability to gain weight very quickly if I don't pay attention to what he eats. He used to be 425 grams but suddenly gain weight up to 450 when I was feeding him sweet corn, sweet potato, and boiled eggs. After I reduced the amount and frequency of this kind of food he lost some weight.

I also noticed that he doesn't eat much if he is outside of his cage, especially if he is playing in the aviary. If I leave him in the cage he everything in his food bowl.

I find it hard to estimate how much food I should give him because he is such a wasteful eater (more than my other birds). Until now he has always access to pellets and veggies but I want to try scheduled meals. Any advise in this regard?

Each Amazon species has its own “acceptable” weight range. You would think they would be the same, but no.

That being said, I expressed my concern to the vet, and he said it’s just a guide and not to be felt bound by it. That he’s eating fine, and better light than heavy anyway.

In your case, I wouldn’t concern myself that he should lose this much or that much. You know he had a crappy diet before, so as long as he’s now eating the good stuff and you’re keeping the crappy stuff away from, he’ll normalize his weight.

Fortunately, I was lucky in training Archie to get on the scale. He didn’t like it at first, but now, no problem.

Was it you that had the information on acceptable weights from a vets office? This little guy has had a pretty rough bought of things till coming to Sophia & trying to give him much better care going forward in his life.

@Sophia101 the vet didn't help or tell you anything regarding where his weight should be for his species & build, length?

Secret weighs 357 as of last night. Each bird is different, you know?

I think folks are looking for Dr. Scott McDonald article on bird weights. You can find that article on right hand side of this page.

That’s a very interesting article, but his results don’t make sense to me. For example, how could Clueless and Archie both weigh less than ANY bird of these species that he’s ever weighed? And look at his range for OWA’s. Those look very low. I’m probably misunderstanding the data.

There’s no arguing that those fat examples are FAT, tragically so, and I can’t argue with an avian specialist, but here is the problem but I guess it also answers the main question:

These are just birds that HE weighed, and although it may be a representative sample since he has data for so many birds, it tells more about the DIET these birds were getting than what the optimum weights should BE. For example, I think my fellow Americans (and I) are close to the heaviest people on Earth, but what purpose would it serve to weigh us all?

I also found it odd at first how he anesthetized them, but then realized these birds must have raised health concerns, and this is how you examine for further issues.

All in all, though...a really great read and one to bookmark.

Ira,

That vet came highly recommended to me by several bird owners when I first adopted MC and Secret. He travels around so you have to catch him when he's local.

Secret is on the light end but her weight never really changes much. Perhaps because she's wild caught?

Hi, sorry I missed a bunch of stuff. I know what to look for when it comes to the keelbone and such but it was all a bit crazy at the vets office trying to figure everything out. He did give me all his info and he’s overweight but slowly getting better. He’s eating roudybush like a champ and fresh fruits and veggies everyday. The guy said he never ate pellets but I didn’t even have to convince him to try the roudybush.

Don’t give him fruits every day. Maybe 2 or 3 times a week, and very little.

Oh, I didn’t mean to disrespect the guy at all! I’m just saying that those numbers don’t really tell us anything or help at all, like my vet advised.

All that matters is if he’s obviously overweight or obviously underweight. Length also comes into play. So people shouldn’t drive themselves crazy that their parrot should necessarily weigh this or weigh that.

Like my wife keeps complaining that I’m too fat, but I know she’s WRONG!
