Air freshener question

I've had my green cheek conure for about a year and I haven't tried using air fresheners/fragrances in his room until now. I got a Febreze Light Lavender plugin with no heavy perfumes, but I read online that they still aren't safe around birds, despite them not having aerosol. I currently have it on the opposite side of the room with the release set to minimum, but I'm unsure if I should keep it. Should I keep it or get rid of it? I'd hate to hurt my baby :( and I don't know how to keep my room from smelling like bird poop  (the product ->)

p.s. this is my first post so I hope I'm putting this on the right thread :ashamed2:

Hi and welcome!

The air freshener is not safe for your bird. Even if on opposite side of room and set to low.

Change the cage liner daily and invest in a bird safe air purifier.
thanks so much! i didn't think of an air purifier :ummmm:

Defined not safe. I’d throw it away and take other safe measures to freshen the air in your home.

Birds nor their cages should smell of poop. Please be sure you're maintaining good cleaning habits and changing liner daily.

I place a paper towel inside the cage under my birds' favorite perch. It catches majority of the poop and I change it morning and evening and the liner every evening.

I change Bebe's papers a couple times a day. His tray gets washed a couple times a week and disinfected at least twice a week.
Please remove that plug in asap. They are super dangerous to a bird's respiratory system.

As others have said, it's unsafe, but I'll add the acceptable approach to improving indoor air quality: reduction (at source), filtration, and ventilation.

For the record, this is the science experiment that's occurring inside Febreze products...

... which generates an eye roll from me, because in the same breath they're disclosing it's unsafe for birds, they still want you to buy the product and displace your birds.

One of the first things my vet told me years ago is that no Febreeze product is safe around a bird. In fact, he said they are deadly and that he had lost clients to Febreeze.

Welcome!!
I’d toss it ASAP, change the cage liner daily, and open up a window for ventilation.. weather permitting.
I personally never liked the plug ins and even if I didn’t have a bird I wouldn’t use them but that’s just me.

The freshest air is usually outside. So to get fresh air, remove any waste (dirty cage paper, seed husks, etc.) & open a window. Here is a safe, three step process: daily cleaning, a good air purifier, an open window when safe.

It is no substitute for cleaning frequently and fresh air from a window, but if you get an air purifier be sure to get one with a carbon filter as one of the stages. This is the part that will remove odors and VOCs. The HEPA filter is the part that will remove particulates.
