Hi there!

I have an indian ringneck who is 3 years old and got him a little over a year ago. It was a bit rough in the beginning as he has a lot of anger/agression in him but ruled it off as bluffing. Over the year, he’s become very sweet and social (with an obsession of regurgitating and being territorial of absolutely everything manmade) there were still many moments where he gets sudden aggression.

About a month ago him and I moved to an apartment and handled the transition well apart from screeches the first week. However, he has become extremely obsessed with blinds (and very territorial of fabrics and chairs), so I covered them with a curtain. But now his obsession has gotten even stronger and will try to perch or climb on the curtain. He hasn’t been on long enough to destroy, I always take him off. Every single time I do so, he will lunge and bite my hair/face.

I do lots of training with him after work everyday to keep him mentally stimulated and reward him whenever he attempts to chew a bird toy/doesnt go on window and he is out of the cage for the rest of the day as soon as work is over.

But he has absolutely zero interest in toys, or chewys no matter what training process I implement. He is too distracted by the presence of a window in any room, continues to regurgitate on everything that is manmade and bites my face when I come near. And during training, he’ll bite me if I don’t give him his reward before he does any tricks and won’t pay attention for more than a few seconds without flying over to “mate dance” on something.

I know this seems like a very complex bird, but does anyone have any possible tips? I’ve been very patient with him and tried so many removal methods, toys and rearranging. I’m not sure what else I can do anymore without being bitten

I am sorry your little guy is giving you grieve. When the seasons change hormones are likely impacting your bird. I would do your darn best to promote foraging puzzles and activities that redirect away from nesting. If your bird is interested in the blinds, is there a possibility that you can change them to another material or type for now? Just a thought.

The major source I encourage you to read is linked below. Birds do not bluff, hopefully this blog post will help.

Being a fully grown boy...he is very territorial.
IMO, his regurging on manmade objects are his way of "ownership."
IRNs are intelligent and independent! (you already know this!)
So " training" is very important...to you!
To him, well, it's something he has to put up with...to get those treats!
I forgot to mention...IRNs are impatient so and sos. ( my Titan was a perfect example of that) They get bored easily...so you get the bites! (OUCH)
Remember...when you are having your training sessions...YOU ARE IN CHARGE...PERIOD! There is no discussion on that....none.
If your guy gets cranky...or bored with the sessions...end them immediately... and try again so other time.
You guys haven't failed...and you'll get it done next time!

What training methods have you done with him?

I see you mentioned rewarding for doing desired behavior... but can you go more indepth of what you do and don't do? What happens when he doesn't do as you ask? What behaviors is he trained to do? etc
