Hello, sorry to bother You.

I have an agaporni with one year and two months old. I would like to know why she sometimes she whines. I'm not sure if it's because she wants attention, if she has a health problem, (I doubt this one, even so I will reduce sunflower seeds, she feels happy much time when I play and I preen her), if she misses something, or if it's related to me removing her box where she used to sleep every day. I was told it was a good idea to prevent hormonal behavior, after 5 days I gave to her the cage again. But sometimes she starts whining. Clues: This week, I was at my girlfriend's house where she has other budgies. Time to time I go there and I go with my bird. My agaporni gets along with all of them except for two, but nothing problematic. Usually, we let them fly freely, she never whines there. Two weeks ago, I introduced my agaporni to another agaporni that belongs to my sister-in-law, who has issues with interaction and trust ( purchased from a pet store you know) . I use my agaporni as an example to help the other one gain confidence and interact more with the elements of my sister-in-law's home without fear win rewards and so on...

Could she be feeling lonely? Is it possible that three hours a day of socialization isn't enough? Is it related to the box? Or am I causing her stress by sometimes traveling with her.. Need advice.

Thank you.

Do you still have the box in? I would remove that if it is still in there.

I am not sure what you mean by whine, could you tell us more? What does she do, what sounds does she make? Is she moving?

I think that 3 hours is little time for a single bird like an agapornis. If she sleeps for 11 hours, has your attention for 3, then she is alone for 10 hours, it is quite a lot. It is important birds have independent play time, but I just think the ratio is little off for her being a single bird. This species spends a lot of their day doing things with another being; preening, playing, calling, eating, bathing, napping.

Is a friend something you have thought about? I think they do better in pairs, but I do completely understand how hard it can be to pair up birds - I ended up with 6 while looking for a friend for my first bird.

In Europe we call bird species by their scientific name. I like it, helps avoid confusion :) While my birds are well known as Agapornis here, we do also have "common" names for some genus.

She stopped whining... it's because i removed the little box where she slept. Now it's fine and playful as ever.

Indeed in Europe we do that. We call Agaporni, because it is! Even so, in Portugal we have interesting names and similar.

We call Periquito-do-Amor -> Literal Translation -> LoveBudgie
We call Papagaio-Anão -> Literal Translation -> Dwarf Parrot
We got Inseparável ->Obvious Translation -> Inseparable
Long time ago as known as (funny history fact) -> Pássaro da República -> Literal Translation -> Republic Bird

Many people in Europe only knows by Agaporni. Other names even in Portugal are quite difficult even if it's a popular bird.

Glad to hear sheś back to normal. Hens can get very hormonal quite easy. Giving them nests, nooks, certain toys at certain times of the year, light cycle, cage placement in the house, certain touches. Lot's of things.
