NOT ME - @Irishj9 scared me off of caiques

A friend of mine currently has a couple conures, and is contemplating getting a baby black headed caique. I have a couple questions for my own curiosity:

Is there any personality difference between a black headed and a white belly? Can a caique be added (in its own cage) to a flock of conures? What are the most likely problems or dangers?

I’d like to make sure she has all information available to her, including the negative potentialities.

The most likely danger is that caiques seem to be extremely intolerant of other species. We've had several on this forum that either have tried or have successfully killed other birds. Especially when hormonal, they will go after birds bigger than them. I would never trust a caique with birds smaller then them.

Completely agree with respect that, that is likely a disaster in the making. I'd really urge your friend to consider another Conure species if she really wants another flock member. I've seen too much sadness when Cakes mix with others.

Again its all been written before

The caique is a wrestler, with HUGE feet and claws enabling it to hang upside down and play all day

Do your conures
a) Have the ability to withstand those dinosaur claws
b) Know how to say "I surrender" in Caiquespeak ( Body language).

BIG DANGER HERE

Unfortunately on other forums in the past I have read of vicious caquie attacks leading to mutilation, like missing beak parts , feet , legs , wing , and deaths .

One of our members has a mixed species flock with caquies that had done well for years? Then had some attacks that severely wounded a quaker .

I believe the lorikeets are also like this very territorial

No no - not my conures. I have a big fear of what a caique could do to my flock :roflmao: They are not on my list of species I want.
be sure to make that clear to you friend that you will not take the caique if it doesn't work for her!

So, basically, you are saying that Caiques are like large Lovebirds???

I don’t mean this to sound funny or rude it’s probably going to because no easy way to say it but if they are as bad as people make out why on earth do a lot of people have them ?

I think some people really like how playful they are, and if you only have caiques, they probably are fine. I hear you, though; my flock consists of the just about the most non-aggressive birds possible other than the beebees. A caique would quite possibly literally ruin my life lol.

Lots of people get married too. despite the 55% failure rate. Lots of people vote for a convicted felon to be president
