First I’m getting cremated cheapest way. Local cost about 2.5K for direct cremation.

my vet said to send her details of my wishes and also hopes I outlive them all.

Phoenix Landing said to send in relinquishment forms indicating they’re for the future and put them(Phoenix landing) in my will which I don’t have yet. they said to arrange short term care(vet) until the birds can be shipped to them.

ok now I need coffee! :whw:

My vet could have her team find local homes. She could keep an eye on their health. I would set up a tiny little trust which would reimburse the new parronts for expenses every month. Or arrange for free vet care for the birds. Maybe that’s the better option so it’s not so stressful traveling.

We add Rocky to your birds, put Eric in the cottage and he’ll take care of them when we’re both cremated
But seriously what are Eric’s plans for the future? You’re lucky you have a bird person kid! None of mine are.

Whole life insurance. This is what I’ll fund my trust with. Considered using the 401K but decided not to. So I’m shopping around for a policy. hopefully the vet will agree to be the trustee.

How far will 100K go for 6 birds food toys and vet expenses for the next 10-15 years? I have no idea. Do I need more?

Does life insurance only pay what you put in it? Or the whole value of the policy?

Why are you making these plans... Ok, I know it's good to make arrangements, but cremation!!! You have a long heathy journey ahead.

I want to get this part settled. When my MIL passed away Jack spent upward of 10K to bury her. I don’t want to waste my bird money

I think it’s a good idea!
Your family has more than enough to deal with just coming to terms with your passing, to have everything you can have organised well enough that they’re not left guessing what the right thing to do is, in all honestly is probably one of the most thoughtful responsible things you can do.
When you own things of considerable financial or sentimental value (including your feathered children) you need to prepare well in advance to ensure they end up going where you want them to.

I got left making plans, tidying up and paying for a funeral that should not have been as stressful for me as it was.
It’s awful to have to deal with all this stuff while coming to terms with the loss of someone special who you love... we all could pass away well before we expect to- the sooner this stuff is sorted the better as far as I am concerned

Life insurance doesn’t make sense to me unless you die early. Otherwise you end up paying more in premiums than you get. Maybe I should scale down expectations and just give the vet a wildlife fund donation for finding homes and nothing for the new parronts except cages carriers and bird furniture.

It´s a shame you don´t know anyone locally who could take them in. Would you not consider trains to get your birds across the US to AA members? You must have people here you would trust and love to take your birds in?
There are a few AA members ¨near¨ me who I think would take in my birds. I´d split them into pairs. I would never trust a ¨rescue¨ around here to find a good home for them. Things are very different here.

My current plan is to have my vet vet her clients with birds and find stable homes locally. Saves travel stress. I make a nice donation to her wildlife fund and the new parronts get cages carriers and bird furniture. This saves me from the headache of making plans involving trust funds and stuff. No AA members in a position to take on more birds and that I know and trust near me.
