A slight miscalculation

Use a small rope to run it the way you want then measure that if you're not sure. We use a long rope with a weight on it we drop down chimneys till it hits bottom or whoever it needs to be then put a knot in the top as high as we need it to make sure the flex aluminum pipe is long enough to work. Stretch the pipe out and lay it down with the rope next to it. If it's as long or longer we're good to go. Do similar routing with your small rope and measure it and maybe a bit extra and that should do it as to how much really need.

My guess for the not-riddle (knot riddle?), is that you received even more of the already-too-much rope, and "more fail", is an anagram of, "for a mile".

Here is something to puzzle over- always draw a picture is the lesson I learned after three days trying to figure it out in my head.
