Some chickens have this very strange defense mechanism. If they are out and about and a bird of prey happens to fly too close to them... the chickens play dead.

They literally roll onto their backs and lower their breathing while staying dead still. This usually succeeds in fooling the bird of prey and as a result the chickens get to live another day.

So I thought that since Pirate (silver) and Fizz (brown) act so much like little chickens... that perhaps they have this little instinct as well.

Yes.

Yes, they do.

*Please note that Pirate and Fizz have both been handled since they were babies. They are very used to human contact and as a result they can be handled more than the average Button Quail. Please do not go and flip your Button Quail upside down if it is not used to handling! These guys can stress very easily and doing that will certainly make their hearts work overtime!*

Also, those aren't my man hands in the photos. :p They belong to my partner.

Here's another photo of the two girls "sharing" a mealworm... just because I really like this photo. :)

I don't think so, think Darth vader breathing (through the mask and all).

It freaked me out, I so wish I would have kept two girls but I choose a boy and girl (not knowing which was which as chicks). I gave them to a Gouldian breeder who used them to clean up the bottom of her large enclosure.

 OH MY!!! They are getting popular at local bird fairs. Usually sell for $5-$10 a pop. I ALMOST got a couple, but decided against it.

Missi I ordered Button Quail eggs and incubated them myself.

It was a great experience.

Here is a video of my eggs hatching.

Thnaks for sharing. Boy, the one egg was really rocking back and forth. When they cut out of the egg it goes soooo fast. They sure are tiny little birds :)

Just a regular egg incubator from Fleet and Farm. Maybe 40 bucks?

I had 100% hatch I belive (10 eggs).

Eggs are cheap, you can even get them off EBAY I believe. They eat crushed pellets right away after hatching so you need to have all supplies ready.

Sure can, it can't be cold though or super hot.

My eggs came via regular mail from a Quail breeder, they were well padded in a carton with food I bought from her as well.
