Hi guys! The rescue I do a lot of stuff for which I moved up in the ranks pretty fast since I had so much experience from the one before I moved, asked me to be an emergency foster for Michael. Michael has arthritis in his spine and has osteopenia. He is on gabapentin, meloxicam, and takes his meds well. In a lot of the pictures I've seen of him his beak is pretty overgrown and the current owner did tell me he does need/get beak trims. She told me he is not very destructive and only really likes leather toys. She also told me he doesn't really leave his cage willingly unless asked to step up and is a little bit cage aggressive at times. She has had him for 6 years and he is 25, they're having a baby and already have not had enough time for him lately so she feels like he needs to find somewhere before the baby comes for sure which is predicted to be 2 weeks from now. She told me he was on pure seed before her and he currently mainly eats Adult Lifetime Harrison's which is my preferred pellet which is nice.

My questions-

River had a lot, but arthritis and osteopenia were not some of her ailments. My question for those who have dealt with this in a bird; does gabapentin and meloxicam feel a little underkill? I feel like Carprofen would be better than gabapentin for arthritis? Also possibly if I should ask about VitaChok when I take him to the vet for bloodwork and everything? Any other supplements or medications you think would be a good idea? Or just focusing on calcium-dense foods in chop?

She told me in the 6 years shes had him he also doesn't fly, if he ever falls he just drops and won't attempt to fly to land or anything. I can't tell how around his keel bone how muscles are from pictures but if he's not really capable and doesn't have the muscles from before she had him, is there anything I can do to help him at least exercise a bit?

The beak issue, I'll obviously try with different woods and different methods, but I wonder if it's possible that the arthritis makes him not really want to chew on wood? I know I have rheumatoid arthritis and it makes things you wouldnt think would be hard with it, harder or painful.

I think getting him home and seeing his abilities is the first step. I wouldn't change medications unless they are not working. Get him home and to a vet for a baseline. See what he will even eat before planning out too much.

Not a macaw, but Ripley has arthritis and rarely flies. He still chews a ton but doesn't like when the toys swing so he mostly chews on the cage floor. I would try thinner wood to start :) As for exercise, I focus on foraging and making use of ropes and hanging stuff outside the cage to get him to exercise as much as I can. Swings are one of his favorite things!

Thank you! Do you think focusing on thinner pine wood is fine to start or maybe a softer wood? I appreciate you!

What would you recommend from your store of more starter toys from him btw? I miss shopping from you! I haven't really had to since River since Basil and Mel rather mostly littler bird toys.

Arthritis doesn't mean he can't chew.

None of my older arthritic birds ever chewed any less than my young guys. Have you talked to the owners about his likes for toys? I'd treat him like a macaw until you know different.

You could try softer wood, but then you're basically looking at balsa, cork, and sola. Those might at least get him interested, though :) For Ripely I did a mix of 1/4" pine, cardboard, and balsa for some of his first to get him going. Now he's a beaver

They told me he only really liked leather toys from The Leather Elves and he never really chews toys but likes foraging. I wasnt sure how it would affect him in that way so thank you!

Birdie (not macaw) doesn’t fly, doesn’t throw wings out to help with balance or falling either- I don’t know if he even knows what they’re there for. He also had no interest in toys but he loves cardboard which has meant I’ve been able to use that and add some thin pine too. He hardly touches the wood but cardboard he’ll obsessively chew for hours every day now.

I also agree it’s best to just meet this bird and get to know it before making plans on food/toy changes.

Thats how his owner described it too, just falls like a rock. I always get so ahead of myself with things, thank you guys for the reminder to be patient lol

That beak is definitely overgrown, and having him continue with only leather has possibly just aggravated the problem, because it is not being worn down at all.
A vet check should include a good beak trim, perhaps you could try a piece of wood covered in leather to get him acclimatised to the change?

I met Michael tonight
I was there for about 2 hours and he had lots of whole nuts from me. He did step up once and she was super surprised because he only really does on her, he's only stepped up on her husband probably about 3x in the 6 years theyve had him.

I feel really bad for Michael. She has other birds and she was telling me how her and Michael used to do everything together but as she started spending less time with him over the past couple years, he started biting a lot more, and she started to hold a grudge whether she wanted to or not and spent less and less time with him. Most of the 2 hours I was there he was standing at the end of a perch and puttinf his foot up asking her to pick him up ):

He was in a petstore for several years of her seeing him before she bought him. The staff wouldnt interact with him much and he was on sunflower seeds those years. I know its hard for her and shes doing the right thing. But i cant help but feel bad for Michael watching his best and only friend slowly fade away from him over 6 years. He's not a bad bird he has the sweetest soul, he craves interaction and I'm hoping I can give him everything he yearns for till he finds a new family.
