    Default Club foot project...

So Im waiting on a special little bird with one foot and one stump...Hopefully when she ready to come home, I'll have a cage built for her...

I'm wondering if anyone here has a "clubfoot" parrot?I'd love to meet him/her to see what kinda mods were done to the cage to make its life a little easier, if any...other questions as well, I guess.

    Thanx in adavance!

Thank you for taking in a special needs birdie.. I have a cockatiel Mikey that is missing his toes on one of his feet.. You could put flat/platform perch in his cage like this one Sqwatters Platform Perch Small Medium and maybe put a piece of fleece over it so its soft for his nub or one like this Original Pine Platform Perches from Things for Wings.. Having a longer cage vs a taller cage would be better and keep perches lower.. And to make toy playing easier I weave these finger traps in between the bars of his cage Finger Trap 5 Pack - FOOT TOYS by MY SAFE BIRD STORE.. There will others who come along and suggest advice/ideas..

I agree with Tiffany. Lots of platform perches. You can also make fleece covers for the platforms. I would evaluate the bird to see how well they get around and then judge what kind of environment would be best for them. My Kendalyn who has twisted feet gets around very well. She hardly ever uses her platform perches. She does prefer thicker rope perches though. You may have to make a wider and shorter cage so they still have a lot of space but can't fall too far. Good luck!

There's a baby CAG at Todd Marcus that has no toes at all. Good thing he was already sold or it's likely we would have walked out with a bird.

Wider and shorter cage is the plan, that really would be best I thought...and I was wondering about the best thickness of rope perch to use...I thought better grip with smaller rope, but on the other hand, she could step on a bigger rope easy with both feet

    Thanx your your into too!
Keep the ideas coming, this is great!

how adorable....and bless your heart for taking this little special needs birdie into your home and heart....We have a special needs tiel, Lord Maxwell Studmuffin...He has a totally parlyzed right leg and neither of his feet grip at all..they are badly malformed and his wings are also malformed. We have a special cage for him- a rodent cage that is very large. there are platforms in there as he cannot perch at all. We also have a special area set up for him on top of Samantha's flat cage top. We put papers on it and food & water & we get him every morning from his cage and put him up there. Of course he goes on his flat cage top(we now have a flat board on that with food & water on top) and he flies everywhere...I do recommend that if the bird is going to spend a lot of time in the cage, that you get the proper bar spacing. our rodent cage does not have the proper bar spacing , but he does not spend time in it really..only at night & when we go out...we also had a crippled finch..hubby made platforms for him...plywood...4inches wide and lenght of the cage...he loved them...you can buy platform perches on line, make them yourself or go to the reptile section of your local pet store..they sometimes have platform perches...I recommend at least two or three platform perches in the cage, one higher up, one mid range and one low down. food dishes & water easily accessible and if you must have regular perches, then definitely vet wrap them.

You definitely should get as far as thickness the next size bigger.. I used to have a cockatiel size rope perch in Mikeys cage but he wobbled on it so therefore he never went to it.. So I got him the next size larger rope and he loves it.. He goes back and forth from his flat perches to his rope perch.. whatever he is feeling like hanging out on at the momement. Its nice to have variety and you will come to know what they like in time.. And like Anne mentioned putting a board on top of his cage is a great idea so it makes walking easier or you could just use a bathmatt.. its cheap and I just love the nice easy clean-up.. Another idea for you is maybe you could get a little happy hut or somthing similar so she can rest her little nubs at nite.. And and by the way, your little sweetheart is absolutely adorable..

Diva Tiel had two toes on one foot and both were paralyzed. The other foot was normal. She loved her little chrome porch shelf and I kept a woven grass mat on it for protection from the cold metal and for padding. The smaller mats could be zip tied to the porch and replaced as they became soiled. She loved them as they were springy, soft and she could nibble them with her deformed beak.
