Question What are female parrotlets like?

All the parrotlets around here seem to be female right now. I would like to get one for our family and I really had wanted a male. This parrotlet would be mainly handled by my teenaged son so I want him to be very social and able to be tamed. Should I wait for a male? Some of the breeders swear that the females are actually sweeter than the males. I love the two female birds we have in our flock, but they can be a little territorial and particular about who they consider their people. What do you all think?
Signature to go here as soon as I take some new pictures and get someone to help me make one!

I think they're all individuals, so it can vary, but I also can tell you that I have a very territorial and highly nesty female parrotlet. She can be quite aggressive, and of all my 8 parrots, she's the most likely to bite. My male is extremely sweet. FWIW.

I wholly agree that it depends on the individual. I've met both males and females, and all vary in the amount of "sweetness". You do need to remember that plets are not really cuddly by nature, some are, and some enjoy being with their people but not touched, and some don't care either way.

Not sure if a parrotlet is the best bird for a teen...that being said my Maya is a female and very sweet to me, but mostly afraid or leary of other people.

That sounds like most of our birds now. He is aware that birds are not usually cuddly an probably shouldn't be cuddled anyway. He has been reading about p'lets and is excited about their curious and feisty nature. So - anybody know any P'let breeders around NC who have some sweet males available

    Where did Claire get her's??

I know your reservations - I've had them too, but my son grew up around birds and is very used to them and the fact that they are a different sort of pet. He has been talking about a P'let since he was about 8 and we have put it off for a long time - waiting until he was very ready. Of course I will be the one ultimately responsible for the bird. He does really well with our IRNs (not always easy either) and he is the only other one in our house that our female lovebird will go to (without biting - that is).

Jane, my male is very nippy when in his cage once he is out he is the sweetest little guy. I would be lost to find a P'let breeder here I got JP in August 1999 when I lived in FL, yup the little bean is going to be 13 next month.

I do know from time to time you see them listed on CL and there is a breeder in Greensboro. I will see if I still have the link, have you looked at Birdbreeders.com?
