    Default "Macaw" proofing a room...

    I currently have 2 cockatiels and will be adopting my first macaw in about a week. What tips do my fellow bird lovers have for making the room safe for my new friend? I'm sure you have some experiences to look out for. The cockatiels will be in a separate room and I know the dangers of having them around each other so that won't happen. Just wanting some feedback on making my room appropriate for the new B&G. Thanks in advance!!

    LOL - the never ending question. Actually, I do have a macaw proof room that I built onto my house.

    Quickly;
    The floor is sheet vynil
    Walls are laminate flooring glued to particle board and the seams are sealed to be water proof
    All window sills and door openings are ceramic tile.

    It works, is safe for H&J and is waterproof so I can powerwash the room.

    Plexiglas is your friend. Get to know him well. You should also get to know his friend Screw Gun.

    It also helps to become friends with the lumber yard guy. The more wood the bird has that he "can" chew. The less he will need to actually chew the room.

    I would start with replacing all the window and door trim with 2x4 spruce because as the saying goes "if you can't beat em, join em". When he's chewed most of the way through those unscrew them and put up new ones.

    Over the years I have learned to keep the cage or perch away from anything made of wood that you value.

    Nothing in the room that they can destroy or you would feel bad if they did!

    Yours must not fly

    If you don't want them to eat it......... it's the first to go. FYI they will eat right through a drywall wall. Plexi

    I will keep this thread to keep my desires for a big mac under control.
    Surely, they aren't all destructive are they?
