I took Zane to the vets today. I thought he was doing better than he actually was. I knew he self mutilating got worse when we moved but it was starting to get better. He has a deep granuloma that will most likely require surgical repair. :( His vet gave him a new collar to try. It lighter than the his old one. I think he's probably able to take it off too. But She also gave him a Dope Provera shot which is suppose help with him being so hormonal. Which will hopefully make him less likely to take it off. He's also on an antibiotic called Levothyroxine.

I'm worry about him needing surgery. Mainly the anaesthesia risk. He's had surgery before and came through it. He had it on his wing. It was actually really successful :) Today I just feel awful for him and like a terrible mom for not catching it sooner

They hide things so well. Keep working with your vet and hang in there.

Hugs to you and scritches to Zane from our flock here!

Thankyou so much!! It be so hard snd emotional looking after a multilator. It can be hard not blame your self when things go wrong.

He has gotta deep before but this time he picked over his breast bone. That is a big part of the problem this time and it's not healing right I tthink

Sending a prayer and a hug.

We moms always feel guilty, when we are good moms. I found out my daughter was on the autism spectrum during my first kindergarten conference for her. I'm a speech therapist, how did I miss this? I'm her mother?

Zane will be fine. We aren't perfect moms. But because you love him so much, he has an excellent prognosis.

Thankyou :) That's how's I feel. It was right in front of me, how did I miss the seriousness of it?

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's autism. I wish you both well :hug8:

Zane's a survivor :) He's come through so many things. Even when he's been really sick before he always acts well. I know birds hide their illnesses, but he's crazy good at it. He was running and hopping on me just the other day. He's a fighter, I know one day he'll lose his fight but I just don't feel now is the time.

Thank all of you for all your support  It really means alot to me :grouphug3:

Anesthesia is so much safer nowadays with inhalant anesthetics. Isoflurane or sevoflurane are typically what's used, and they're not systemically absorbed so they go to sleep quickly and they wake up quickly. There's always a risk with anesthesia and it still makes me nervous, but if there's a good vet and staff there it makes that risk minimal.

Be sure to ask your vet questions about the procedure itself if you're nervous. Like what monitoring equipment they have and how long they think he'll be under. If they say a tech or vet nurse ask if they are certified/licensed (I'm not sure about the laws where you are, but in the US a vet can call someone a tech/nurse and they don't have to have a license).

Yes anesthesia is much safer now days. My birds have been under anesthesia many time and some of those times were when they were very ill. The procedures that were done under anesthesia saved their lives more than once.

Have faith in your vet and in Zane, who is a great fighter.
