I think all cockatoos have that tendency. It's closer to the surface in some than others. I love Ariel a lot, but she will nip me in the face for no reason other than I think she thinks its funny to catch me off guard. She really likes to lull strangers into a false sense of security and then nail them if she gets a chance. Its not like she's a perfect angel. My pet sitter puts her right up there with my pair of amazons in terms of scary birds she has to take care of when I'm gone. I think she just learned quickly that I'm not intimidated easily enough to be much fun. Doesn't stop her from trying every once in a long while. I just keep my face away from her when in doubt and I think maybe she just doesn't bite that hard because she likes me. Not sure why she doesn't get me badly. She's an 800+ gram bird and certainly has the equipment to do so if she wanted.
What kind of bird is Ariel? Wow 800+ grams....

Is that what happened John? I wouldn't let a toddler near a bird like that without supervision! Very close supervision!

The toddlers never got near him either. They used hockey sticks and jugs of water to torment him.

A bite is a bite. Everyone can have their own definition of it...it's a manifestation of a bird telling you something, in their own way. Most birds will bite for a reason that they perceive. The one exception to that, as John has said, seem to be 'toos. That means you have to have even more respect for their beaks.

I have immense respect for the littles and their biting abilities. Some of the worst bites I've ever received were from a tiel...Mocha bit the living heck out of my hands last year when I had to get him into a travel cage during a tornado warning...my hands looked like chopped liver...and that was on top of Buddy's biting just before Mocha went into his cage...but we had to get them downstairs...

You have patience and understanding, my friend. I wouldn't have that bird two minutes. I got lucky with Fred.
If you are referring to @JLcribber and Tica, if John had just given up on him he would have been rehomed a 100 times by now.

I'll have to send the Terrorist over there for a week or so. For some "enlightenment". He will bite for no (visible) apparent reason and catch you when you are not expecting it. He was trained very well by some pretty mean toddlers. He's not like that anymore but he always carries the tools in his box. I love the sheethead.
Lurch was the same way, immediate bite, no warning at first. The first hard bite he gave me once we got home from getting him was so quick I didn't have time to get out of the way. I was scritchen him under the chin thinking I guess we're going to be friends and he pivoted lightning fast and tore a chunk off the back of my scritchen finger. I thought about strangling him then thought better of it and decided I was going to have to step back to plan B. I got lots of BITES till we worked things out and he slowly decide to trust me and I was his friend, but yes, biting was now one of his tools so I had to read him or be fast when he was in a pissy mood. My finger bled for a hour and took a month to heal. Lurch finally started giving fair warnings at least and didn't try as hard once I was his chosen one.

She is a greater sulfur crest with at least a significant amount of galerita in her blood line. I doubt she's pure galerita galerita, but she's at least half or more. Depending on hormone seasons and how much she likes my cooking, her weight ranges from about 790-840. Lately she's been averaging 816 or so and feels like a solid fit weight for her. Not fat. She's about the same size as a few big male umbrella's or some small to mid sized moluccans.

Remember when the Supreme Court judge famously said he couldn't describe pornography but he knew it when he saw it? That's kind of how I feel about a parrot's bite. I've gotten nips but you know when it's a BITE.

That's why we are so happy that John was the one that found Tica. ♥
I believe that you will have credit for all the good things you do in life, and to help a animal IMO is the best thing you can do.

I know you are, Eloy, so happy. Why you just can't refrain from doing the happy dance.

I have three cockatoos and have never received an aggressive bite... knock on wood ... my U2 slipped once and grabbed my hand to keep from falling. It bled but it wasn’t intentional. The second time she had become aggravated with a non stop talking and moving 12 yr old who’s parents had talked me into introducing them when he thought he was interested in parrots. I saw the dead eye stare and immediately blocked her wih my hand. Thank god she got me, blood started flowing quickly. I wish i had a picture of her when she realized she got the wrong person. She was horrified and said a million I love you’s back to her cage. Our visitor didn’t even notice anything had happened.

That reminds me of the time Cassie got me on the hand. My wife was handing me the phone...Cassie detested women in general, and my wife was a target. Anyway, Cass mistook my hand for my wife's...and bit hard.

While I was repairing the mishap on my hand, Cassie kept saying "sorry" over and over...it was the only time she ever said it...
