Xylitol is a drug used to treat kidney failure and liver problems. It just happens to taste sweet and also leaves a cool feeling in the mouth. One can never assume just because a human can eat something it is OK for pets who are a fraction of our weight; especially when they would eat more than just a serving of it if given the chance.

Yup. Anything that is labeled as being sugar free should be treated as being toxic to dogs unless proven otherwise. Xylitol can be in everything from chewing gum to peanut butter.
