Why did you choose a lory or lorikeet over other species?

Or more like why did they pick you? :D

Initial reasons for us were:

Low allergy/irritant/dust being the main criteria due to my animal dander allergy.
Interactive/playful bird
Small to medium size

Several trips to the bird specialist store and information from the net narrowed down our choice to lorikeets and conures - we were looking at the musk lorikeet and a sun conure. One of the days we were in the shop, there was a new bird just out from the back where they hand raise the bubs and had thrown itself into the water bowl to wash in the cage it was in. It was a little mustard scaly breasted lorikeet and they had named it "MC" for Mighty Cute and he/she lived up to that name! I retrieved the little bedraggled and wet creature to cuddle it and I was smitten. I took MC home that day. Sadly we've since lost MC but we have expanded our flock to 1 lory and 3 lorikeets plus 2 cheeky lovebirds.

What's your story with your first lory/lorikeet?

Their playful nature I guess. I was scared of owning one for awhile due to the squirts but so far it isn't so bad and I don't think I would own more than my Mooks. He is a handful at the best of times!

We were warned about the mess with their poops, but I've grown up around horses and compared to mucking out stables, doing three cages every day is a breeze so I wasn't too phazed. Some days they are worse than others, it's the scalies that do my head in. They must have pooping competitions.....I can't believe they don't lose weight with the amount they shoot out. :D

They make some pretty cool sounds too.

eta - Most will probably hate me but my kitten Gypsy and Mooks have a pretty good relationship and Mooks is helping Gypsy to learn that birds are her friend. Mooks nibbles her whiskers hehe.

They make pretty cool sounds till they decide that the shrill contact call is needed and your ear drums take a beating and ring for the next two hours. :D

Mine were rehomed because someone didn't want to deal with the mess. Now I look at the empty cages and I seriously cannot recall the mess - they were too darn cute for me to notice that! They don't like it when it's too hot or when it's pouring and make a lot of noise - something I couldn't do much about.
