When I got Darwin he was recovering from a broken wing and had been wearing a collar for awhile so he sort of forgot how to hold food with his foot and wouldn't eat nuts. I got him to steal an almond from my lips and he started eating them again. He did like pistachios and cashews but will no longer eat them. He pretty much only eats almonds and the odd peanut that's in the seed mix. It's sad because the other birds get their varied nut treats and he just gets another almond. He doesn't like Nutriberries much either but will eat some of it if I break it up.

Tiki used to like pistachios too but will now only eat almonds and pecans (& peanuts which she rarely gets).

Itsy & Quack will eat most nuts I offer.

None of them ever liked pine nuts that I know of.

What nuts do your birds like/not like/prefer?

Oh gosh, if it's a nut they are eating it. I feed almonds, hazelnuts, brazil, walnuts, macadamias, pistachios and pine nuts. The only picky birds I have are Maui & Korbel ( GO FIGURE THE TWO I RAISED ) Neither like brazil nuts.

My quakers are usually wholly uninterested in nuts.

The only nut Sunny liked was cashews. He wouldn't touch almonds and thought pine nuts were poison.

None of mine would eat Brazil nuts and I don't think macadamia either. I don't buy walnuts because I don't like them and the bf is allergic but maybe should try them. I don't think I've tried hazelnuts with them.

Seeing that Darwin is an AG, almonds would be very good for him. They are very high in calcium and have less fat than any of the other nuts. Others that he might like are pistachios and pine nuts, but for an AG I really recommend Almonds.

Lucys favorite is probably pistachios, but she loves Almonds in the shell too.
We also give her pine nuts, but you have to watch where she drops the shell, they sure hurt bare feet
We really haven't found a nut she doesn't like to be honest.

Lola's [Cape Parrot] all-time favorite nuts are almonds, but she also loves a good walnut, pecan, or hazelnut. She's never had a peanut, and although it's been a while, the last few times I gave her cashews and pistachios she didn't care much for them. She is also meh on pine nuts.

My mom's Hahn's Macaw, Karat, goes insane for cashews.

Leto loves nuts :joyful:

I'd say almonds and walnuts are his faves but he also really likes cashews, pistachios, pecans and macadamia nuts. He'll eat peanuts too but i try not to get him mixes with them because I'm scared of aspergillis.

Is it true that soaking the nuts for 15-20 minutes in water before giving them to our birds brings the nutrients out in them?

He won't eat pistachios (he used to) or pine nuts. He just turns his head away if I try to offer him anything but an almond.

I haven't heard this but maybe someone else can pipe in. Tiki soaks her own nuts by getting a sip of water when eating them.

"Almond skin contains enzyme inhibitors that protects the almond until the proper levels of sunlight and water allow it to germinate. The belief is that activating the enzymes in the almond allows better digestion and access to its nutrients. "

I think soaked ones are tastier :)

Mine neither! I don't blame them really as a few years back I ate a handful and got Pine Mouth. Worst thing ever! Couldn't taste anything for about 10 days! It can happen with certain pine nuts processed improperly in China and other Asian countries.
